Africa Travel Guide – Trip to Africa

The word ‘Africa’ summons many beautiful images and aspects to one’s mind. A poet would praise the surreal beauty of the land, a music lover would think of the energy behind the beats of an African drum, an animal enthusiast would dream about spotting wild animals in their natural habitat and so on. Africa has always been just that- a world with steep claims to history, geography, culture, traditions, and nature. The word ‘Africa’, comes from the word ‘Afri’, which means a cave- a term that was also used to describe the people who dwelt in North Africa, near Carthage. Africa today, is the second largest and populated continent in the world,  further subdivided into Northern Africa, Southern Africa, Eastern Africa, Western Africa and Middle Africa. 53 independent countries come together to make this great continent.

Africa is a continent which much to offer and study. Fossils, and other evidence of human settlements, going back 7 million years, is reason enough for anthropologists to believe that Africa holds the key to the story of human civilization. Theories abound of the human race, originating from Africa, and later spreading across to other parts of the world. Centuries later, Africa would become the ‘hotspot’ of European battles, in a bid to colonize the huge continent.

This not only ensured that they gained access to the rich wealth that Africa offered, but also stamped their identities and habits on their colonies, including languages and cuisines. The people of such colonies, have continued the traditions that became synonymous with their own. The ancient practices of agriculture, cattle rearing and the like, give insights into the daily life of ancient civilizations. The dense rainforests with a unique and varied animal and vegetation life, provide a good classroom for naturalists and animal lovers to learn more about nature. It is no wonder then, that researchers too find a jungle safari as enlightening an experience as a tourist would.

Modern day scholars are going back in time to Africa, to study the ways of the many tribal groups that have still held on to their traditions without allowing advancements and technology to invade their private world. The sounds of music which have reverberated through the land, using instruments that are as close to nature as possible, are being used in various genres all over the world today. Not to forget, the other little trades such as pottery, arts and crafts, and other handiworks, which proudly display the traditions of this great land.

It is no wonder then that Africa is often spoken about as ‘having something for everyone’. The beauty of Egypt with its pyramids and other wonders beckon you to explore history. Kenya, is touted as the most popular safari destination the world has. The natives of Mali, have their rich artworks to offer the artistically inclined eye. The national parks and landscape of South Africa are a must see as is the magnificence of the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.  So, pack your bags and take a peek into this wonderful continent that has much to show you.
