The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, is touted to be the second largest country in Africa alone, its name having originated from the Arabic word which meant ‘the islands’. The four islands that the name refers to, however, became part of the mainland in the 16th century. The country of Algeria, has to its credit a rich and bloody history of invasions and colonization. It first began with the Ottoman Turks who held on to their conquered lands with great success, until the French proved too strong for them in the 19th century. With the conquest of Algeria by the French, there soon came an influx of natives from other countries like Italy, Spain and Malta, bringing with them their native languages, customs and so on.

Even today, although Algeria is predominantly tilted towards the Turkish culture, it still has touches of European culture too. These influences can be seen clearly in the kind of historical sites too, the differences visible in the designs itself. However, Islam is the main religion followed by the people, while Algerian Arabic is widely spoken. While there are quite a few beautiful architectural spots to visit, nature too is much appreciated for her beauty. An outstanding feature of the domes and mosques here, are that they bear strong Islamic features. El- Oued, a dominant town in the Souf region, otherwise known as the ‘town of a thousand domes’, is one such example. The local souq or market and the carpets bearing traditional designs sold, are a huge favorite with tourists.

The ancient city of Tebessa, which too has strong Roman influences, is famous for the manufacture of traditional carpets. Another wonder here is the Gate of Caracalla, which is a triumphal arch built to celebrate war, or to honor any leaders of war. The Temple of Minerva, Basilica of St Crispinus, and the Roman theater are also architectural wonders. The Casbah (citadel) in Algiers (the capital city), is flanked with mosques and masonries belonging to the 17th century. The citadel itself was like a small city built on a hill with the sea dividing the city into two parts- the High and Low city. Another place of interest, which has won accolades for the manner in which the inhabitants live as one with nature, while retaining their customs and beliefs, is the limestone plateau called M’zab. There are five walled cities here otherwise called as the Pentapolis, with Ghardaia as the main settlement area. The lovely architecture adds a warm medieval touch to the place.

Nature’s art is unleashed most beautifully in this country. The many beaches in Algeria offer a perfect getaway from the busy world. One example is the Turquoise Coast not only relaxes your senses, with its beautiful sands, but also has various water sports. Tourists can visit red beaches, wildlife and the extensive forestry in another place called Jijel. It is no wonder then that Algeria is a popular tourist spot for those interested in a blend of history and nature.
