Asia originated from the ancient greek word “Aσia”. Asia is the world’s largest continent when measured by landmass and human population. The literal meaning of Continent is “a distinct landmass”. It is one of the most populous continents too. Asia being the largest continent is 17,139,000 sq.mi (44,390,000 sq.km) with about 3.3 billion people and nearly 3/5th of the world’s total population. It stretches from Japan in the East through Russia in the West.

In the Eastern and Northern hemispheres, Asia is traditionally known as part of the “Landmass of Eurasia” with the Western part occupied by Europe – lying East of Suez Canal, Ural Mountains, South of Caucasus Mountains, Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. The region is bounded by Pacific Ocean in the East, by Indian Ocean in the South, and by Arctic Ocean in the North.

Asia is also known for its certain other attractions like its highest point Sagarmatha Mount Everest 8848m (29,028ft) Nepal. Largest lake is Caspian Sea also known as “Salt Lake” which is 3,71,000 km sq., Ozero Baykal, Lake Baikal (31,500 km sq.) in Siberia is the world’s largest freshwater lake if measured by volume. Longest River in Asia is Yangtze in China which is 6,380 km long.

Economically, Asia has the third largest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) after North America and Europe but the largest in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). As of now in 2007, China has the Largest National Economy within Asia in terms of GDP and thereafter followed by India, Japan and South Korea. China, officially known as “People’s Republic of China” is a Communist Country when it comes to economic issues.
Since 1960, South Korea maintained the Highest Economic Growth also known as “Asian Tiger” but now China has come to the forefront. Thereafter, India and Japan in which India being heavily populated has the Fourth biggest economy and Japan relatively small is Third. Asia’s major financial centres are Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Mumbai.

Asia has an agricultural economy and regions where power facilities, trained labour, modern transport facilities, raw material are available have developed industrially. Hunting and Fishing economies usually prevail in the forest regions of North and South Asia.

Rice, being the most important food crop is grown for local consumption in the heavily populated countries. Otherwise, there is an Intensive Cultivation of rice in the Coastal Plains and rivers of South and East Asia. Asia’s other important food crops are Wheat, Sugarcane, Tea, Rubber, Peanuts, Coconuts, Soya bean, Jute, Cotton, Silk.

Asia, being the largest continent on Earth is also rich in natural resources like fish, water, metal, petroleum, forests.

Manufacturing capacity of Asia is strongest in the East and South East Asia like China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan. Many countries like Europe, North America, Japan, South Korea, they have operations in Asia’s developing countries so that they can take advantage of Asia’s cheap labour supply and its developed infrastructure.

It also has many valuable mineral exports like Manganese from India, Chromite from Turkey and Philippines, Tungsten, Oil, Coal from China.

With so many countries out here in Asia it is very difficult to find as to which religion is practiced here but mostly you will find Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. Other religions like Christianity, Judaism, Jainism, Sikhism etc are also found here.

Many languages are spoken here which includes language families and language isolates. Most Asian countries have more than one language which is widely and relatively spoken by people all over the region.

Asia is currently the most rapid growing region of the world. The continent’s economic performance has been truly remarkable. Their ambitions, commitments, focus, determinations have set benchmarks for various other parts of the world.

It is advisable to avoid comparison between seven continents of the world. Their scenic beauty and charm rests in the eyes of the traveler. All the world’s major religions originated here in Asia and two out of every three people live here that is why it is generally known as “The Gorgeous East”.
