When India was under the British rule Bangladesh was a part of the state of Bengal in India. Falling prey to the mal intentions of the British who used their ‘divide and rule’ policy and subsequently Bangladesh was divided into east and west Bangladesh. The present day Bangladesh was then East Bangladesh. This division was done on the basis of religious and economic divide prevalent in the region. East Bangladesh had a predominant Muslim population while West Bangladesh had Hindu locals. Prior to 1947 when India gained independence from the British the country was partitioned to give birth to the country of Pakistan. Since Pakistan was a Muslim dominated country therefore the control of East Bangladesh went over to Pakistan and was renamed as East Pakistan. The governance and control over this region was under the hands of Pakistan. Over a period of time resentment started to boil within East Pakistan and the region demanded independence. It was not until 1971 that this region gained independence and was now named as Bangladesh. But life has not been easy in the country prior to its independence. Bangladesh has been continuously reeling under the effects of coups, emergencies and other political instabilities.
