The first Mayan settlers arrived in Belize around 1000-2000 BC. They set up flourishing Mayan cities here and life was tranquil and fulfilling. In 1508, the first Spanish ships docked up here and they started capturing the towns and tried getting Belize under their control. This Spanish attempt by 1600 was thwarted by the Mayans. It were the British who nest set their eyes on Belize and reached its shores by 1638. The arrival of the English gave rise to disputes between the British and the Spanish over the issue of control of land. In 1798,these disputes were finally laid to rest as a result of the Battle of St. George’s Cay where the British proved victorious over the Spaniards. In 1862, Belize was proclaimed to be a new world colony and was then referred to as British Honduras. It was finally renamed as Belize in 1973 and was not until 1981 that Belize got independence.
