The Republic of Benin is well known for its heart wrenching tales of slavery, colonization and the strong cultural traditions that continue to this day. In the face of modernization, this country has managed to hold on to the essence of its past, while at the same time, striving to ensure that its economy grows in tandem with the rest of the world. The earlier name of this country was Dahomey, which was changed later to the name “Benin’’ in the year 1975, a name it has carried on ever since. Porto- Novo is the capital of Benin.

In the earlier times, Benin was infamous for the slave trade that continued there, by the Europeans. After they left, the country began to lay emphasis on regional trade, agriculture and cotton production.  There are many beautiful and interesting places worth a visit here. Abomey is one such place to visit that is considered to be the cultural capital of Benin. This place was once home to kings, and the ruins of palaces can still be seen. The Abomey Royal History Museum, is a story teller in itself, telling tales about how the kingdom of Dahomey actually was, before being colonized. The capital city of Porto- Novo too has three museums of great significance. Natitingou, is another town, which has a museum with more than 300 objects in it. Besides that, this place is home to talented artisans and craftsmen who often sell their creative wares. If you would like to get a taste of what simple village life is like, then visiting the traditional village of Taneka- Kobo is a must. There are three natural pools, which can be seen here and a grotto, which is considered sacred. The Ottamari castles, are worth a visit, where the natives would be more than happy to give tourists a taste of their daily life.

Benin besides having such a rich past, also has immense scenic beauty. The city of Dassa, is renowned for its beautiful hills and rock formations. It is a joy to take a bike ride through the stony paths, and one can even do a bit of hiking and rock climbing. Savalou, too, is surrounded by hills, making hiking an ideal way to ssavour the beauty. Animal lovers will find that a day spent at Kandi, is most rewarding as elephants frequent the watering holes there, as well as monkeys and other animals. Besides that, there is the Pendjari National Park, home to over 217 species of birds, and over 45 species of mammals. A safari through this park is a wonderful experience. If you would truly like to relax in a calming environment, you must pay a visit to the Kota Falls and Tanougou Falls. The serene beach at Grand- Popo is beautiful, complete with its own small fishing village.

Benin is the place to go to if you wish to visit a relaxing tourist spot , which will not only calm the mind but also touch you with its stories.
