Nestled amongst the Himalayas is the quaint, peaceful and not widely known kingdom of Bhutan. A visit to this country is bound to let you feel as if you have moved back into time. The country of Bhutan is one of those very few destinations which have succeeded in preserving its rich heritage and past and not allowed modernity to take over. Tourism is not given major importance by the people here who are very protective of their country. Clean, fresh mountain air amidst beautiful natural landscapes is what the country has in plenty which leaves the tourists thoroughly invigorated and rejuvenated. The local population of Bhutan is fiercely religious and several Buddhist monasteries can be found throughout the place. The unscarred topography of Bhutan hides within itself plenty of amazing views of rich green valleys and nature trails. The recorded proofs pertaining to the historical background of Bhutan are dated back to the 8th century when Guru Rimpoche is said to have toured the country from Tibet and spread Buddhism there. In fights and quarrels were very common amongst various families who ruled over Bhutan in small pieces. It was not until the 16th century that Ngawang Namgyal announced himself as the ruler of Bhutan and took control over the process of its unification. His death in 1705 again led to chaos and unruly atmosphere in the region. Having had enough of it, it was in 1907 that Bhutan’s major chiefs and monks sat together and decided to hand over the reins of the country to the Ugyen Wangchuk family. This family till date rules Bhutan and is responsible for taking care of its affairs.
Thimpu is the capital city of Bhutan and the official place of residence for the royal Bhutanese monarch. The throne of the king is present in the main secretariat building of Taschichho Dzong. The other destinations located in Thimpu which are frequented by the tourist community include the national library which is the only place to get access to the recorded historical past of Bhutan, the national assembly hall, the only golf course in Bhutan which is a 9 hole course set amidst beautiful scenic backgrounds and the Thangka painting school. Paro is a valley destination and the places here worth visiting include religious, symmetrical structure of Rinpung Dzong and the Monastery of Taktsang. Tourists are not allowed entry into the monastery but can get an incredible view of the monastery from the top of a small mountain which can be trekked. Situated near the northern limits of Bhutan is the mountain peak of Jhomolhari. The Paro river has the glaciers situated at the five sister peaks as its source of origin. Situated at a small distance from the capital city of Thimpu are the monasteries of Cheri and Tango; worth a visit for sure!
