Botswana, was earlier known as the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland. It was only recently in 1966 that the state adopted its new name with  Gaborone as the capital. In fact, some of the earliest Christian missionaries to come from Europe, visited Botswana too. One such famous person who worked very hard to abolish the inhuman slave trade practiced here, and who is well remembered by the people, was the famous explorer Dr David Livingstone. Today, Botswana is credited with having come a long way from being a poor country to a middle-income country.

Botswana is a country that takes a lot of pride in honing its local  artistic talents and handicraft trade. Basket weaving is one such trade that is taken seriously here, particularly in the villages of Etsha and Gumare. The artwork done on these baskets have improved with time, as the commercial demand has increased considerably. Thamaga pottery, from the southeastern part of Botswana, is famed for its quality. The Oodi weavers, in the village of Oodi, are also well known for the historical stories and other past events that they often weave into their carpets and other tapestries. The Gaborone National Museum and Art Gallery, with its beautiful collection of handicrafts and paintings is also a must see. One can even trace the history of Botswana, in the gallery compound. Botswana is a goldmine for archaeologists. There are some very early contributions to painting, which were made in the Iron and Stone Ages, depicting hunting, animal and other human figures, which can be seen near the village of Manayana. The Lepokole Hills in Zimbabwe, which are made up of huge granite blocks, are famous for another reason too. The natives who stayed among these hills over the last 300 years recorded events and incidents from daily life in paintings which can be seen in the caves. There are many Stone Age tools and pottery that have been excavated here.

A trip here, would not be complete without a visit to the famous game and wildlife reserves. Botswana is home to the second largest game reserve in the world, which is supposedly bigger than even Switzerland. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with different kinds of woods and plants, besides animals is a popular attraction. The Moremi Game Reserve is another such reserve, which has the distinction of being one of the most beautiful reserves in the whole continent. Here one can savour the beauty of woodland, acacia forests and lagoons. The animal and plant life found here is very diverse too. The Okavango delta, which spreads over the Kalahari to form a delta and islands, is a favourite spot for tourists. There are many safari lodges and other camps that have been set up here, which allow tourists to have a first hand view of the delta forests and also of the many species of birds that can be found here. It is said that more than 400 species of birds can be spotted here. With so much beauty, a trip to Botswana is sure to be a very rewarding experience for you.
