There was a time during the 16th century when the limits of Brunei extended up the present day boundaries of Manila in the Philippines. It was as a result of subsequent attacks and invasions by the Spanish, the Portuguese and the English that led to the downsizing of the boundaries of Brunei. Till the late 1800’s it looked as if Brunei would soon lose its identity as most of its land was conceded away but then the discovery of oil on its land did the magic trick for Brunei. It was in 1984 that Brunei gained independence and slowly and steadily embarked on its journey towards prosperity; prosperity that came along because of the rich reserves of black gold that the Kingdom of Brunei sat upon.
