Africa is a continent of many stories, and myths. At the same time, it is also a continent that places a lot of importance on names. The very name ‘Burkina Faso’, means ‘Land of the upright people’. This country once saw immense struggle take place, between the English and the French- as both powers were very keen on bringing the land under their control. In 1960, finally, Burkina Faso attained its independence.
The main language spoken here is French and the capital city is Ouagadougou. There are more than 60 ethnic groups in the region too. Like most other African countries, the care to preserve old traditions and pride in one’s culture, runs strong in the natives. Most of the tribes prefer to live simple lives, and conduct their daily events such as weddings, funerals etc, according to old customs. The tradition of telling stories orally including fables, having distinctive styles in music and dance continue even to this day. The musical forms too carry stories, and are not only good forms of entertainment but are also deeply expressive of human emotions. Many tribes still prefer to stay away from modern tools and equipment and are more than happy to make their own using age-old methods. The tools made are used for prayers and other rites, and also in daily life. It is not uncommon to find that a father may pass on his trade to his children, which is why there are families specialized in pottery, weaving, making bronze articles, and other leather crafts, which can be found in nearly all villages.
Burkina Faso is divided into four regions, each with its own share of attractions and tourist spots. The Western region has many natural wonders to see, such as the fresh beautiful waterfalls of Karfigelah, which a visitor can see only after passing through mango groves. The peaks of Sindhou, a beautiful mountain chain, attract many tourists. The central region, where the capital is located is an important business and tourist center. One can visit the game park of Zinaire, where elephants, lions etc can be spotted; as well as the park of Bangr Weogo where there are more than 360 varieties of plants, and over 160 species of birds, besides animals.
The crocodiles found in the ponds of Sabou and Bazoule are considered unique. The people in the town worship the crocodiles, as they are harmless and consider them holy. The Eastern region is an animal lovers dream because of the game reserves and parks found here. The Park of Arly and the National Park of W are two such examples, full of animals and many species of birds. Safaris are also arranged for tourists. In the Sahel (the northern region), the stone carvings and the archaeological museum of Pobe Mengao, are an important attraction. The museum traces the history of the country, and gives tourists an opportunity to learn about other cultural traditions.
Burkina Faso has much to offer a tourist- culture, African traditions, unforgettable tourist spots, but above all, the love and warmth of the people.
