The Republic of Burundi, is located in the Great Lakes region of Africa. This country was an independent kingdom from the 16th century, but it became a German colony and in the First World War, was passed on to Belgium. However, in the year 1962, Burundi finally got its independence with Bujumbura as the capital. Although, this country earned its share of infamy due to the high political unrest and killings from within, nobody can deny that the main drawing attractions are the culture of the people, and the natural beauty all around.
The people here are quite leisurely in nature. Kirundi and French are the two main languages spoken, and majority of the people are practicing Christians. Cultural roots are deeply embedded in the hearts and daily lives of the people. The performances of the Royal Drummers of Burundi, who use hollow tree trunks, covered with animal skins are an interesting sight to watch at ceremonies. It is said that the art has remained the same since generations and is passed on from father to son. Songs, poetry, dances, legends and stories form the backbone, of the culture here.
Poetry written and sung usually is centered around agricultural life, and adds to the festivities of weddings. The ancient art of telling stories, and passing on legends orally, is still followed. ‘Kivivuga Amazina, is a poetry contest held among cattle herders. The art patterns found on pottery, sculptures, baskets etc tend to be geometrical in nature, and have other decorative figures. Asymmetry in patterns is encouraged as it lends a touch of individuality to each handicraft. Dances too, are an important tradition, which have been much appreciated around the world.
Lake Tanganyika situated here is the largest rift lake in Africa, and has more than 150 species of fishes. This lake is important for studying how various species of fishes evolved. In addition, one can also spot crocodiles, and hippopotamuses from the shore. One can indulge in water skiing and other water sports here. Gitega, a town located in the capital city is an important handicrafts center, and has a museum too. Artistic works in leather, wood, and ceramic, found in the craftwares village, are for sale here. There is also an art school, where ceramics, paintings etc are made.
The lake Rwihinda, in Kirundo is called the ‘bird lake’, and is a haven for bird lovers as many seasonal birds can be spotted here. The ornithological reserve here, is a must see. Tourists can even go for a canoe ride across the lake, in order to get a better view of the scenic beauty. Burundi too has its share of parks and reserves, notably two among them being the National Parks of Rusizi and Ruvubu. The former is home to many migrant species of birds from all over the world and also to water birds, while the latter is home to more than 200 species of birds.
