Cameroon is often called a ‘miniature Africa’, simply because, simply because of its geographical, climatic and cultural diversity. This country is home to more than 200 ethnic groups, with English and French as the main languages spoken here. In the 19th century, Cameroon became a German colony but was divided between France and England after the First World War. However in 1961 the country gained its independence from colonial forces, and in 1984, was named the Republic of Cameroon. The political and social stability enjoyed by people in this country, has allowed industries and other developments to take place. It is no wonder then that the GDP per capital income here is considered high, in comparison to other African countries.
Music and dance play an important role, like in other African countries. They form an important role in ceremonies, festivals, and social gatherings. Dances are considered very important to religious devotion. The songs are transmitted orally from generation to generation, and are sung in accompaniment to drums and other basic instruments. Like in other African countries, the handicrafts industry is very important and forms the basis of most livelihoods. Such crafts are used for religious and commercial purposes especially. Pottery produced here is believed to be quite premium as the clay found in the western highlands is also of high quality. Working with sculptures, making ceramics, doing designs in bronze and brass, are also carried out. The women, generally prefer to work with lighter materials such as bead making, embroidery, ceramic painting and basket weaving. Many of these handicrafts are exported to other countries also.
Cameroon is divided into 4 regions- the coast, the western highlands, cities and the north; each with their own tourist spots. Situated along the coast are two beach resorts, which are quite different in nature. One can find black, volcanic sand in Limbe, whereas Kribi has white sand beaches. If you like hiking and bike rides, then Mount Cameroon offers you an unforgettable experience. The capital city of Yaounde, besides being important in terms of business, is where a tourist would find many museums, which give insights into the country’s culture. The Western Highlands, have their own scenic beauty and one can spot waterfalls, and lakes here too. Bafoussam, is believed to be the largest arts and crafts manufacturer in the country. There are many small tribes that live in this region, and tourists can even visit the ‘palace’, of the leaders or chiefs. Cameroon, too is home to well known wildlife reserves, one example being Waza National Park in the north, where more than 379 species of birds can be spotted as well as some large animals. However, efforts to preserve the ecology are being taken, as a lot of damage has been done by poachers. The South region too, has, forest reserves, with beautiful fauna, and animals like elephants, chimpanzees etc.
Travelling around Cameroon, is quite comfortable, and the availability of good hotels and resorts, ensures that any tourist, would want to keep coming back.
