The Canary Islands are actually an African group of 7 islands in total, but are located in the kingdom of Spain. The early history of these islands is mainly centered around the colonial rule, imposed by Spain in the 15th century. The names of the islands are Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Fuerteventure. The official language spoken here is Spanish.

While a lot of similarities exist between these 7 islands, namely in the culture that prevails, the architecture that can be found and in the natural beauty; each of them are also distinct in their own ways. El Hierro, which is the smallest of these islands, is often said to be the most beautiful too. What stands out is the difference in landscapes, where one can spot lava flows, green pinewoods, and rocky coasts with huge cliffs. Walking or biking are the two best ways to take in the beauty. Underwater diving gives you a peek into the breathtaking world below, full of many species. La Palma, is the largest of the islands, with natural beauty of a different kind. The natural springs of Marcos and Corderos, and the Maroparque, where one can learn about many kinds of flora and fauna; are a must see. The Roque los Muchachos, located more than 2,420 mts above sea level, is also home to an important astrophysical observatory. Cliffs of varying shapes, and woods, are part of the charm of La Gomera. Historical sites such as the Torre del Conde, the Garajonay National Park, and the many little villages with age old traditions are a must visit. Los Organos, is a cliff made by lava, which is quite deep, and has a wonderful landscape.

Tenerife is home to springs, golf courses, rock climbing, paragliding, windsurfing, horse riding and night tours in the city. Another popular tourist spot is the Mount Teide National Park, which has a volcano at a high altitude, making it the highest mountain in Spain. Gran Canaria, provides ample scope for tourists to enjoy the scenic calm, while indulging in leisure sports. Wind surfing, kite flying and diving are  some of the activities frequently carried out. One can also spot dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.

Besides that, this island is an important cultural place for museums, classical music and film festivals. Fuerteventura, is often known as the peaceful island. It has amazing landscapes, such as Mount Tindaya, which was believed to have magical powers. The villages here are full of different architectural buildings and museums, besides having a very strong crafts industry. More importantly, there are 13 protected open spaces, full of palm trees, which cool the environment. Lanzarote, is a UNESCO protected biosphere reserve, where nature and art blend together beautifully. The Ruta de los Volcanoes and the Chinijo Archipalego ( a natural park), are best seen on foot or on bike. The many beaches here , which offer various sporting activities, are equally lovely.

The Canary Islands are the ideal getaway for those who love nature, and want a taste of natural beauty.
