Central African Republic is a landlocked country, in the interior of the continent. It was an important French colony in the 19th century till it gained independence in 1960. Cultivation of food crops is the main livelihood, while export of diamonds is an important industry. The official languages spoken here are French, Swahili and Sango. Bangui is the capital city, with its own attractions.

The culture of the people here gives us a clear idea about their daily life. Families are of prime importance, and considered sacred. The country is made up of different tribes and that is another reason for the diversity in practices and languages. The main occupations of the people, are as close to nature as possible. Their livelihood is very dependent on hunting, fishing, agriculture and making simple crafts. The traditions prevalent in the rest of Africa, of passing on legends orally, poetry and story telling are important threads weaving society together. Social events like weddings, naming ceremonies etc are celebrated with great aplomb. The Pygmies found here, are very protective of their ways of life.

The capital city of Bangui, has an interesting museum, called the Boganda Museum, where one can see tools used by pygmies, musical instruments and old artefacts. There is also a palace on the outskirts of Kolongo, one can visit if time permits. Besides that the Chutes de Boali (waterfalls), are also worth a visit.

The main attraction of this country lies in the natural surroundings. As many of the areas are uninhabited, many natural unexplored areas can also be found. The untouched parks and virgin woods found here are a must see for travelers. The woods are full of wild elephants and gorillas that can be spotted in their natural habitats. Besides that the rainforests here are full of varied flora and fauna. The altitudes and rainfall encourages tropical plants to really flourish nicely. The Dzangha Sangha is a park with both flora and fauna at its best. One can spot elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees and bush pigs to name a few. The forest clearing also has a lovely stream, which flows through it.

Bai Hokou, is very important to conservationists and researchers globally as the gorilla habituation and research project is ongoing here. The studies conducted are mainly to understand how to preserve lowland gorillas better and to also understand them.  Tourists are encouraged to visit this place but are encouraged to help the gorillas remain in their natural habitats.  However, this country is also serious about protecting the animal life, which often fall prey to the hand of poachers. The St Floris national park , which is a UNESCO heritage site, consists of savannahs with different kinds of flora and fauna. Elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, gazelles and other species are protected.

Although this country makes the headlines more for its poverty and other social issues, a nature lover will never regret a trip to this place. Possibly, nowhere else in the world, can one spot wild animals running free, and tropical rare vegetation, untouched by man.
