The fire present in this aptly named chili shaped country is a culmination of the varied landscapes adorning it. Known to the outside world as the land of wine and authors of the like of Isabel Allende and Pablo Neruda, this country is anything but simple. From the driest surreal desert in the world- The Atacama situated in the north and the snowy areas in the south, Chile is a world of contrasts. For travelers in quest of sheer natural beauty, Chile is the place to be. The heartwarming, resilient and traditional people live here along with the European hustle and bustle in a harmony commendable enough.
Chile was under the Spanish rule from the 1500s till about the early 1800s until in 1817 the country got its first leader in the form of Bernado Otiggius. But soon enough lack of support made him resign from this position. The next strongest leader to take charge was General Augusto Pinochet who took the leadership after leading a military coup and leashed terror in the country till 1993 when ultimately the people of Chile chose Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle as their new leader.
A visit to Arica to experience its beaches, watersides and the renowned San Marcos Cathedral finds mention in all travelers list. From here excursions through the Atacama Desert to reach the hot springs of Mamina and the Pica valley oasis are also worth the effort. The largest open cast copper mines located at Chiquicamata and the geysers at El Tatio too call for a visit. UNESCO designated world heritage site of the scenic town of Valparaiso is surely the pride of Chile. Surrounded by snow capped Andes this Victorian town has some of the best vineyards and orange orchids found in the entire country. Situated to the west of Valparaiso are the Juan Fernandez Islands which is supposed to be the inspiration for Defoe to write his famed novel Robinson Crusoe.
On the Easter Islands are present the majestic yet mysterious Moai which are 887 gigantic figures made from stone. Also, not to be missed are the Torres Del Paine which are 3 monstrous granite structures located in the Chilean Patagonia in the south of Chile. This UNESCO declared Biosphere Reserve is the ultimate challenge for any adventure seeker. Blessing the capital city of Santiago is the statue of Virgin Mary which is perched on the peak of Cerro San Cristobal. Close to the capital city is the city of Portillo famed for its incredible skiing resorts and peaks. The Lake District created by the combination of Lake Villarica and the Trancura and Cincira rivers is nothing short of true paradise on earth.
With the snow capped awe inspiring Andes providing a back drop to the endless acres of green fields and orchids, Chile surely takes one’s breath away. True virgin beauty of nature definitely finds home in Chile.
