Think Columbia and think of coffee and cocaine.  The diverse climate and varied landscapes presents a heady mixture of these cultivations. Known worldwide for their drug and weapons cartels, this country has so much to offer beyond this infamous impression. With warm hospitable people, charming colonial cities, snow capped mountains and warm sunny beaches; this country is as inviting as any other. The emeralds found in Columbia are amongst the most perfect ones found in the world, surely this is one gem of a country!

The famous traveler Christopher Columbus is credited with the discovery of Columbia. Initially the country was colonized by the Spanish only to finally regain its independence in 1819. But the ever present tensions between the various political fractions in the country and lately due to the drug and arms mafia have always left Columbia as a troubled nation.

The economy Columbia is effectively agriculture dependent with coffee being the major crop to be exported. With a bounty of minerals and precious stones found here, this also adds to the export potential of the country.

Being witness to several historical wars and clashes the city of Bogota is the capital of Columbia. With magnificent colonial architecture found throughout the city, it is treat to walk down its small scenic streets. This city surely has a well preserved old world charm still retained in the numerous churches and museums found throughout the city. A visit to the Museo Del Oro which is being credited as being the most reputed gold museum in the world is worthwhile. While walking down the streets do step into the Iglesia de San Ignacio and Iglesia de Santa Carla churches. But the one which attracts tourists the most is the Church of fallen Christ which has the mysterious reputation of making miracles happen.

Built between the 11th and the 14th century was the city of Ciudad Perdida which is aptly named as the lost city. Found hidden deep within dense forests and mountains this lost city is a haven for archeologists. The city of Santiago de Cali is the most densely populated city of Columbia. Home to many rivers and water bodies and several local cultural festivals like the “Feria de Cali” and the “Rio Cali” brings in tourists.

Famous world over for its rare salt mines and the Salt cathedral is the city of Ziapiquira. Housing within the walled and forted city of Cartagena de Indias are mystic churches, palaces including the famous one called Palacio de la Inquisicion and various other monuments, which are living testaments of the rich historical era prevalent here. With an impressive coastline streaching miles the country has many notable beach resorts especially found in the city of Santa Marta. Found amongst the picturesque combination of river bays and lush green groves is located the magnificent Tayrona national park. Also home to Columbia is the Santuario de las Lajas which is believed to have the image of Virgin Mary emerged from a rock. This place is hugely popular amongst pilgrims in search of miracles. Also notable are the islands of Islas del Rosario, San Andes and Providencia which are good cruise locations.
