To start off with the first thing that needs a change is the perception that people have of this country. it is true that till some time back this country was at war but now the atmosphere is pretty calm and conducive for outsiders to plan a trip to Cambodia and the situation is moving towards betterment with each passing day. It is a very sad thought that even though Cambodia has ample natural treasures in its lap it has failed to receive the kind of attention it truly deserves from the tourist community world over.
Historical evidences relating to Cambodia’s past date down between the 1st and the 6th century. The Funan empire was the first kingdom which ruled over Cambodia followed by the Khmer dynasty. It was under their rule that the country of Cambodia reached its pinnacle of prosperity and success. Causing an end to this Golden era was the Thai invasion which was subsequently followed by various European powers staking claim over Cambodia. The French were the last to colonize Cambodia and independence finally came Cambodia’s way in the year 1953.but instead of prospering the country took a turn towards unlimited destruction and chaos. Marred by political instability followed by the attack of United States on Cambodia during the US- Vietnam conflict plunged the country towards misery. Cambodia was then plunged towards unprecedented destruction under the rein of the communist Khmer Rouge. The mass destruction carried on for years and it was not 1998 that things moved towards improvement as the country broke free from the shackles of the Khmer Rouge.
Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia and is also the city most frequented by the travelers visiting Cambodia owing to its modernization. The city has this unique French charm attached to it which draws in tourists. Situated in the capital city are the Royal palace and the famous pagoda called as Wat Preah Keo. The palace as well as the Pagoda are magnificient artifacts loaded with luxury. The pagoda has its floor laid out with silver tiles allowing one to assume how magnificent the entire structure is. The Pagoda houses a statue of Buddha which is made by about 90 kilograms of solid gold which in further bejeweled with diamonds. Simply spectacular! But qualifying as the most important destination of Cambodia worth viewing is the Angkor Wat. It is essentially a Hindu temple complex which had remained hidden and secluded from the rest of the world till now. Since it is situated in the wilderness creepers and other plants had overgrown on the temple structure. There are about a hundred temples present in this complex which were built under the Khmer empire. The walls of the temples are adorned with sculptures which depict various Khmer kings who were considered to be as Gods. The entire temple complex has now been cleared of trees and other plantations and the view now is simple breath taking. a trip to Cambodia becomes completely worth the effort when one gets to see the first glimpse of the Angkor Wat.
Cambodia is a treasure which still waits to be revealed completely. A process which is sure to reveal some more spectacular facets of Cambodia which have remained hidden from the world up till now.
