Comoros is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean located off the eastern coast of Africa. Grand Comore, Mayotte, Moheli and Anjouan are the four islands that make up Comoros. This country is the third smallest nation in Africa in terms of area. Moroni is the capital while Comorian, Arabic and French are the main languages spoken here.
The Comoros was colonized by the Arabs quite early, whereas the Europeans came to these islands much later. Arab influences are stronger here and can be seen in the architecture, customs and culture of the people. Islamic traditions run strong in the three islands besides Mayorette, the latter being more French in many ways. Islam being the main religion followed here, festivities associated with Muslims such as Ramzan, Eid etc are followed strictly.
The landscape of Comoros is known for the volcanic peaks, high cliffs, long coastline and untouched peninsulas, stretching across all four islands. Each of the islands has its tourist spots. Grand Comore, is said to the youngest, largest and highest island in the small group. The largest forested area is also found here. Mount Karthala is the highest point of Comoros. This mount is also an active volcano. Although the volcano has erupted more than 20 times in the past, it is also beautiful to see, as it is covered with evergreen forests. Around the crater, one can even find heather growing there. However, tourists should plan well ahead before actually making the trip.
Moreover, Grand Comore is also renowned for its sunny clean beaches. Chindini Beach located in the south and Chomoni Beach are two such examples. Mayotte is another island that is developing at a fast rate. One can find many forests covering the peaks of the mountains located here, and even some forests in the coastlands. Mayotte is also home to the Turtle Beach, as it is popularly called, for the conservation work done with regard to green turtles. In this undisturbed environment, this protected species is encouraged to nest and breed in peace. Illegal exploitation of this species had caused worry about possible extinction threats.
Moheli is the smallest island of the group and is the least populated. Moheli is home to many fragrant trees and plants, as well as to some exotic birds such as the Livingstone Fruit bat, which is the biggest bat in the world. There is also a Marine Park here set up in 1999, built with the sole purpose of preserving the marine species found here. Anjouan, is the fourth island here full of coral reefs and sandy beaches. Hari ya Moudji is an old town with many palaces built in between the 16th and 18th centuries. Besides that there is also the beautiful Dziancoundre Waterfall to visit. This island offers nature lovers and enthusiasts a lot of scope for biking and hiking.
A visit to these four islands, will indeed be an enjoyable experience because there is so much beauty to admire. Each of these islands being distinct in their own ways, offers a traveller much to see.
