Located in the Central American isthmus is the country of Costa Rica which is definitely the perfect place in the tropics to spend your vacations in. A privileged nation blessed with amazing climate and varied landscapes; Costa Rica is located in the middle of the western hemisphere. Pristine beaches, exuberant scenic landscapes and impressive biological diversity is what Costa Rica is all about.
With almost 100 years of political stability backing it, the country is the oldest democracy amongst the Latin countries. In the early 1500’s Christopher Columbus set foot in Costa Rica in the present day city of Limon. His arrival was followed by the arrival of the Spanish who came with the goal of colonizing this country but was met with hard resentment from the natives. The Costa Rican’s fought bravely for almost 40 years before giving in to the Spanish conquest. Despite being under the Spanish control the Costa Rican culture flourished and they earned the reputation of being a peace loving country. It was finally in 1821 that it was awarded its independence and it till date stands by its motto of peaceful coexistence with its neighbors.
The Costa Rican culture is heavily influenced by the Spanish rule and its presence can be seen in the cuisine, architecture and monuments present here. The capital city of San Jose a living testimony to the same. An amazing mix of traditional and Spanish architecture, this city is decorated by the structures and rich architectural heritage found here. The Teatro Nacional, the Parque central, the national museum and the numerous parks in the city are worth a visit. A liberal sprinkle of extraordinary natural beauty and adventure vista’s is what Costa Rica is known for. A unique 100% humidity containing protected cloud forest is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The Corcovado National Park has probably the best tropical forest trek in the entire world. Known for its mangrove, palms and a crocodile filled lagoon, this national park is home to the jaguars, giant anteaters amongst the other flora found here. Apart from these there are a horde of other national parks present here. Amongst them are the Manuel Antonio National Park and the Barra del Colorado Natural Wildlife Refuge are worth a mention. Also found here is the Palo Verde National Park which is home to both native and migratory birds.
In the rainy season the otherwise calm rivers of Costa Rica find their hidden fury and become the most conducive sites for the perfect white water rafting experience. Making its presence felt are also the Tabacon Hot springs. These geothermal springs are fed by the Tabacon river and the water is heated by the Arenal volcano. Famous for surf sports is the Tamarindo beach located on the Nicoya peninsula. Located on the Caribbean coast are plenty of beaches to feast one’s eye’s, the biggest being the Puerto Limon. Also famous for pristine sandy beaches are the islands of San Lucas and Isla del Coco.
Forming the land bridge between North and South America this amazing country of Costa Rica speaks of Spanish heritage, diverse terrain, and National parks in all its glory. Visit this country and bring back the elements of nature in your life.
