Cote d’Ivoire, is a country in the west of Africa. This country too has quite an interesting history to claim to. It was first colonized by the Portuguese in the 15 century, and later the French fought for these lands in the 19th century. The French however were more interested in the exports of the many crops produced here namely coffee and cocoa. By the time, the country got its independence in 1960, it has the best economy among all the lands colonized by the French. Yamoussoukro is the capital of this country and French is the main language spoken by the people here.
More than 60 ethnic groups make up the natives of this country. The Akan tribe is famous for the pottery and terracotta figurines they make, exclusively for rituals and ceremonies. This practice has been dated back to the 1600s and is studied in detail by archaeologists. Christians and Muslims form a minority and most natives rely on traditional beliefs. The belief in the dead, ancestral worship, and magic to keep evil spirits away, is followed with precision. The ‘medicine men’, or priests that Africa is associated with, are important figures in society, who tell fortunes, and bless articles. Stories and legends are passed on orally to the children, to make sure that they are aware of the rich culture they inherit. An important festival celebrated here in the Fetes des Masques or festival of masks, which takes place in November. Competitions are held between many villages, especially dance contests and the people celebrating the event also wear masks.
