It is not uncommon to have heard tales of the Vikings in history classes at school. The Vikings, who were known to be fearless, and strong with a zest for life, were very much from Denmark. One can even say that the same spirit runs in the blood of the Danes even today. The kingdom of Denmark is located in northern Europe. Its capital is Copenhagen and the official language spoken by the people here in Danish. Although it is impossible to exactly place when the Danish nation was originally formed, it is believed that there were settlements from as early as 12,500 BC in this region. Denmark has always maintained its peace with its neighbors, but fell to German hands in 1940, during the time of the Second World War. However, the peaceful and friendly nature of the Danes came to light when many Jews who were being persecuted elsewhere in Europe, found a safe refuge here. Today, due to extensive government initiatives and measures to ensure that the people are happy, Denmark has a sound economy.

It is no wonder then that in a survey conducted, it was found that on an average, Danes were very happy with their daily life. Almost 95% of the population are people of Danish descent. Foreigners who come from Asia, and the Middle East form the other 5 % of the population. The natives here are looked upon as very friendly and hardworking people, who believe in a sound daily routine. This country has one of the longest lines of monarchy, which is strong even today. Denmark too has made contributions in the field of literature and science in particular. Children all over the world love the stories of Hans Christian Anderson, who was famed for his imaginative tales. An important name in physics- Niels Bohr, was a scientist who was born here.

A trip to Denmark feels like it is a different world altogether. The beautiful villages, castles, and coastline bring to mind fairytales one reads as a child. At the same time, Denmark has so much of natural beauty too, in the form of hills, valleys, forests, and cliffs. The best way to begin the tour is in Copenhagen-

Copenhagen -  This is a city that allows artists to freely express themselves as can be seen in the paintings done on walls of many houses. The Amalienborg Palace, where the royal family stays is a beautiful 18th century palace and is worth a visit. One of the most photographed statues, that is a must see, is that of the Little Mermaid, the story by Anderson being the reason for the sculpture. The National Gallery should not be missed out if art is a passion as one can see more than 700 paintings from all over Europe, under one roof.

The National Museum traces the history of the Danes up till the present day, and is set in an 18th century mansion. The Viking Ship Museum, which is a must see if you are interested in the Vikings is worth a visit as 5 ships have been reconstructed here. The Kronborg Castle, built in the 16th century and immortalized in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, is interesting to see.   The Knight’s Hall, found here is one of the longest halls in Europe alone. Let live the child in you with a visit to Tivoli gardens, which was built in 1843. Not only are there many rides there, but it also has a pantomime theatre, and is the venue for many concerts and shows. Copenhagen is also famed for its Opera House, where many performers have graced the venue. The interiors are filled with works done by many famous artists. A visit to this lovely capital, would not be complete without some shopping and it is to the Stroget where one has to head to, if picking up a few things are on the list.

East Denmark- This part of Denmark is renowned for its natural beauty allowing tourists to indulge in hiking, trekking and other activities. The Cliffs of Mon are 75 million year old white chalk cliffs that appear as if they rise from the sea.  The Maribo Lakes, are a must visit , as they are located in a beautiful area and are surrounded by marshland and forest. Bornholm, east of the mainland is full of farmlands, white beaches and rocky coastlines. There is even a 13th century castle ruin. It is a joy to go for a bike ride on one of the many bike routes. The Knuthenborg Park on Lolland is one of the largest parks in Denmark with many varieties, with over 500 species of trees, flowers and plants.

Although the capital and the East of Denmark are the main tourist areas, there is so much more to see in this country. It is almost as if every part of this place has a story to tell, or is renowned for something. Funen located in the southeastern part of the Denmark, is called the Garden of Denmark. One can see many historic castles here and manor houses too. Odense is famed as the birthplace of the writer Andersen, and every July a festival is held in his honour celebrating his life and works. There is even a cultural centre here called Fyn Village. The Jutlands are very similar in the scenery that is found in all four regions, yet an individual visit to each part would also reveal the differences. The North Jutland area, is known for the scenery, and is the meeting place of three seas. The long sandy beaches, dunes, and cliffs, and green forests are famous. In West Jutland, however, one can indulge in bathing, golf, long walks, and kite flying. Beaches, forests and rolling hills can be found in both east and South Jutland.

Denmark has so much to offer a tourist. One cannot get bored in this place that has so much to see. Besides the tourist spots, spend some time savouring the Danish cuisine and their extensive wares of desserts and cakes.
