East Timor’s past is scarred and independence did not come easy for this country. the Portuguese were the first to stake claim on this country as early as the 16th century followed by the Dutch. East Timor played a very vital role during the second world war when Australian troops were stationed here to act as buffers for the main troops out ahead battling it out in the war zone. But this step bought disaster to East Timor as it was soon attacked by Japan. This time period saw many deaths and destructions marring the country. after about 3 decades of colonization Portugal decided to move away from East Timor and this opportunity was seized by the Fretilin guerrillas who after taking scores of lives proclaimed the Democratic republic of East Timor. But normalcy was yet to stake claim here as soon in 1975 the country was invaded by Indonesia which again plunged the country into harsh times of brutality and mass killings. It was not before the later half of 1979 that the Indonesian government brought forward a peace treaty and withdrew out from east Timor.

With such a turbulent history written to its name the country has done good for itself to establish itself as an interesting holiday spot amongst the tourist community. The small sleepy village of Com is a very popular tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches and resorts. Fishing and snorkeling are very popular here. If water sports is your kind of thing then the destination of Atauro is where you should be heading for. With its beautiful sparking waters this place is perfect for all kinds of water sports. For trying out the local cuisines of East Timor the holidaying family must head towards Cape Fatucama which is home to several small eating places serving the local delicacies. Located here on the Areia Branca beach is an incredible statue of Lord Jesus similar to the one found in Rio.
