The name Egypt conjures up more images of the wonderful past that this country has had than of the present. Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa, with important cities like Cairo and Alexandria. With a culture that is more than 3000 years old, it is only in 1953 that Egypt officially became a republic. Tourism, agriculture, petroleum exports are a few of the industries that the economy depends on. Cairo is the capital of this country.

Though there are a few tribes such as the Bedouins that make up the natives of Egypt, it is the most populated country in the Middle East. Islam and Christianity are the two religions followed here, but Islam is more predominant. Much of the culture that exists in Egypt is akin to other Muslim countries in Africa. When one talks of art, architecture, literature and music, one is immediately reminded of the ancient civilization that flourished here. However, modern day Egyptians are keen on the arts too as can be seen in the importance of the Cairo Opera House, which is the main performing arts venue. The music usually played by the people here is a mix if African, Mediterranean and other elements, while instruments like the flute are used.

Egypt is not simply about its past, but has other attractions such as diving and scuba diving in the Red Sea as well as many shopping spots. Khan al- Khalili, is reputed to be one of the busiest markets in the world and is in Cairo. Shops selling anything from perfumes to cloth, line the streets. The Sayyidna al- Hussein, is an important mosque, which attracts many of the faithful. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, is world renowned for the more than 100,000 artifacts it has on display. Treasures of Egypt ranging from finery, to other precious materials, including the statue of Khafre, are a few of the many attractions.

The Tutankhamun Gallery and the Royal Mummy room in here is a must see. The Pyramids of Giza are not only important as wonders of ancient architecture, but also for the history that the walls contain. The Sphinx, also known as the Abu- al- Hol, is another attraction that never fails to amaze.

The Temple of Karnak, which was the main place of worship in the time of Thebes, is another wonder to see. The engravings and painted inscriptions from the 12th dynasty, is considered important to Egyptology. The West Bank itself, is an area of limestone hills, where one can spot the Valley of the Kings, including many ancient temples and statues. The Tomb of Tutankhamun and Ramses II, besides the Tomb of Nefertiti is also a must see. Abu Simbel and the city of Luxor, should not be missed out, if a complete tour of the ancient world is on your agenda.

Taking a dip in the Red Sea to witness the life underneath, and going for a camel ride across the desert is worth a try. You may even want to come back to this wonderful place, to relive the experience again.
