Known for its tiny size, the country of El Salvador also referred to as the ‘Tom Thumb’ of the America’s, lacks the marked cultural differences which other Central American countries are known for. But what is lacks in its indigenous culture it makes up for it with its diverse majestic natural beauty. The Spanish had huge agricultural dreams they wished to fulfill here which subsequently led to the downfall of the native’s social growth and prosperity. It was not before 1821 that El Salvador gained independence from the Spanish rule. But the independence gave way to unprecedented political instability and economic degeneration in the country. The impact of the Great Depression of the 1930’s which crippled the country’s economy did not give way till the early 1960’s. With political stability continuously being a victim of local uprisings and riots, it was the 1997 elections that finally gave way to democratic governance in El Salvador.
With the end of its turmoil’s, El Salvador has opened its doors for the curious traveler. The doors leading to picturesque landscapes, towering volcanoes, gushing rivers, beautiful beaches and archeological marvels. While exploring this country one gets the feeling of being on one of the most incredible treks ever experienced. With plenty of excavated sites and ruins to please the history buffs the UNESCO declared world heritage site of Joya de Ceren takes prime importance. This ancient Mayan village was excavated from beneath ash and dates some 1400 years ago.
The beautiful remains at Chalchuapa in the Tazumal region and the Acropolis located in the San Andres region are true jewels worth visiting. With almost 320 km of un-spoilt scenic coastline, El Salvador here houses resort hotels, quaint riverside villages and pristine beaches. The coastal town of La Libertad along the Pacific coast has made its place in being a surfer’s paradise. This warm weather town attracts tourists in droves to experience the climate and enjoy the surf while getting a healthy tan! Surrounded by abundant lakes and volcanic mountains, the quaint and spectacular town of San Vicente rests at the base of Volcan Chichontepec. Also home to the most ancient church in the country the El Pilar this town provides the perfect weekend retreat.
On inching up the highlands one reaches the Parque Nacional Montecristo which is a cloud forest reserve. Home to a horde of amazing flora and fauna this place snatches you away from the hustle and bustle of the urban cities. Renowned for its handicrafts is the town of La Palma situated near the El Pital which is the highest peak in the country. Sitting on top in the crater of the Cerro Verde volcano is the picturesque lake Coatepeque.
Even though the country might have a history marred with unrest and instability El Salvador has surely come a long way. With travelers unraveling its multifold beauty, this country has the potential for being one of the hot spots for everyone to visit.
