So guys here we go with an amazing overview of Fiji. Suva is Fiji’s Capital city
Fiji consists of an archipelago of more than 800 islands and islets, 110 of them inhabited, located about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Lying on the air route from Australia to the west coast of the USA, Fiji is well served by flights, and is attracting an increasing number of tourists.
Originally inhabited by Melanesian islanders organized into a number of tribes, the islands were visited by Dutch explorers in 1643, and from 1800 attracted growing number of traders, along with missionaries who converted the people to Christianity. A period of intense tribal warfare was brought to an end when a paramount chief cede sovereignty to the British in 1874, Five years later, in 1879, the British began bringing in Indian laborers for the purpose of sugar production; by the time Fiji obtained its independence in 1970 their descendents outnumbered the country’s ethnic Fijians. The languages spoken in Fiji are English (official), Fijian and Hindustani.
The main islands are of volcanic origin. The Yasawa islands have a brooding malevolence that is complete contrast to the relaxed and easy – going nature of their inhabitants. Black rock pepper soft golden beaches, and craggy green hillsides covered in ominously dark grassland are rent with valleys and ridges that show the violence of their volcanic creation. Most of the Fiji islands are separated from the 2 larger islands by the Nanuku Passage. About seventy percent of the population lives on the two biggest – Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. These have a sharp and rugged relief, rising to Mt Tomanivi, the highest point on Viti Levu. The islands lie in a cyclone part and trade winds bring heavy rain to their eastern sides. Dense tropical forest covers the highest slopes.
There are many large reefs off the coast of the Fiji islands including the great sea reef near Vanua Levu. The 100 kilometers long Great Astrolabe Reef near Kadavu is one of the World’s most fascinating reefs. The Great White Wall, a white coral reef lies in the diving areas off the coast of Taveuni. Sugarcane is grown on the fertile coastal plains, sugar exports and tourism with 30,000 visitors per year being developed of the Pacific island economies, producing copper, gold, silver, clothing, and timber.
No visit to Fiji Islands is complete without the excitement and adventure of an expedition by 4wd truck into the surrounding country. Each step in this land of enactment allows the fresh discovery of a picture, the frame of which is a tranquil pool.
