Welcome to the land of biodiversity, warm and inviting locals, welcome to Guyana. The country is harmonious mix of rivers flowing through lush green rainforests and savannahs and beaches in its natural best glory. The word Guiana (the original spelling) literally meaning ‘land of many waters’ is perfectly apt for this country having almost 1,600 km of rivers flowing across its landscape. One has to look at this wonderful country with one’s heart to fully assimilate the beauty is has to offer.
When initially discovered by Columbus, the two major tribes of Arawak and Carib inhabited this country. It were the Dutch who first colonized this county and ruled over it until the 18th century when the outbreak of the Napoleonic wars shifted powers of this country amongst the English, Dutch and the French. The British ultimately proved superior and converted the country of Guyana into a colony of British Guiana. Amongst others, Indians form the largest racial group present in the country. The Indians were bought to this country initially as slaves and then even after with the abolition of slavery in 1834 they decided to stay on. It was only in 1996 that Guyana was guided to independence by a coalition government.
The capital city of Georgetown and its nearby areas is where almost 25% of the total population of the country resides. Decorated by colonial old world wooden houses resting on stilts and the old Dutch canals along with its green boulevards gives this city an undisputable charm. Gracing this city are the wooden structures of the City hall, The St. George’s Cathedral and the unique L shaped High court building. With the steeple of the St. George’s cathedral an impressive 143 feet long, it makes the cathedral the tallest timber structure in the world. Located in this city is also the botanical gardens which has to its share an impressive range of palms, orchids and other tropical flora. To understand the culture and the rich past of Guyana a visit to the Natural History museum and the Walter Roth Anthropological museum are worth a visit. Splitting the county into two is the river Essequibo on whose banks are the breathtaking savannahs and mountains. Located in this region are various resorts offering treks, bird watching activities and river trips.
The Annual event of Easter Rodeo is the biggest crowd puller from across the Brazilian border and the rest of the world. Located in the Pakaraimas are the Kaieteur falls which the highest continuous single drop fall in the world. Five times higher than the Niagara, this fall is located on the Potaro river. The water plunges a good 741 feet and then a further 81 feet into a gorge below. Surrounded by virgin unexplored rain forests this magnificent natural display is awe inspiring. Of the various beaches found in this county the Almond beach, Shell beach and the Saxacalli beach are worth the mention. With clear blue skies, white sand and the therapeutic waters these incredible beaches make this country inviting.
To hear the birds, the river water and waterfalls, to experience the calm and beautiful nature in all its glory take off to visit the country of Guyana.
