The landlocked destination of Laos is surrounded by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Myanmar. Laos was virtually inaccessible to rest of the world because the socialist rule in the country did not want the western influence to affect them. I was not until the late 1980’s that the world was allowed to take a peek into this beautiful laid back country of Laos. The country might still have to scale walls towards progress and development but even in its present state a trip to Laos will reveal to you virgin natural beauty which is still to find its presence in the world tourism map. What the country might be lacking in development it compensates the same with natural beauty. The country is virtually unexplored and it is open for you to come, visit and holiday here and take the time to explore this destination where it is promised that what you see is just a small peek of the actual beauty which lies beneath. A major chunk of the population in this country dwells in villages and the capital city of Vientiane is more of a developed village than a city. This might allow you to conjure up the kind of trip that awaits you in Laos; surely not the luxurious one but yes a trip that is extraordinary, different and having all the ingredients of making your holiday adventurous, fun filled and at the same time relaxing!

Recorded historical data points out the fact that it was around the 13th century that people came and started settling in the present day area of Laos. Small groups of people were united and a single unified kingdom was formed which was named as the kingdom of Lan Xang. Till the time internal tensions did not brew within this kingdom which later on resulted in its disintegration, life was going on smoothly and peacefully for the locals. By the 17th century Thailand took control over a major part of this country. the local natives of Laos fought hard against the Thais but they proved to be too strong for the Laotians to defeat. Hence Laos as well as Vietnam came under the rule of the Thai’s. it was not until the arrival of the French on the soil of Laos that it could get rid of the Thai control. The French control on Laos continued till the 19th century who then finally decided to move out in the year 1953. The independence which came their way was difficult to handle as it resulted in a state of total chaos and unruliness. It was in the year 1975 that the communist party won the national elections and came to power and along with them bought about law and order in the country.

When thinking of Laos as a holiday destination the two images which hold immense importance are that of beautiful picturesque natural beauty blessed to the country and the second is that of symbolic religious imprints in the form of various temples which are found throughout the country. Such is the religious bent of the locals here that the old capital of Laos, Luang Prabang, at one point of time had about 66 temples located within its periphery! Though only about 30 of these have managed to survive the tide of time and are present today but still this number too is quiet a sizeable one in itself. Amongst the other famous Buddhist temples located in Laos the Wat Si Sak situated in Vientiane and the Pha That Luang are of significant importance. The rare, mystical and beautiful views of nature in its scenic best can be captured throughout the country. the location of the city of Luang Prabang is incredible in itself, situated with a backdrop of beautiful mountains this city is located at the confluence of two rivers. Also located near this area are other wonders worth a visit which include the Pak Ou Caves, the Royal Palace museum and the Kuang Si waterfalls.

Laos might not have enough of modern amenities to pamper you but the natural beauty that it does have to its name is capable of making you forget everything else that exists in the world. So visit Laos, open a book and soak in the beautiful environs of this heavenly abode.
