Situated on the Mediterranean coast Lebanon has to its share an amazing coastline which is overlooked by magnificent snow capped mountains. A combination rarely found in any other country of this size. Along with some exceptional scenery the country also to its name has a rich traditional heritage which has seeped in and founds its way into the everyday lives of the local population. The present day Lebanon is a unique blend of tradition and sophistication in perfect balance with neither of them overpowering the other. The country is still struggling through the process of rebuilding after surviving the ravages of the civil war which raked through the heart of the nation.

The earliest recorded settlement in Lebanon was formed by the Phoenicians which dates back to about 3500BC. But the existence of Lebanon as a country came about only after the Second World War with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. A part of this empire went on to become the county of Lebanon. It remained under the French mandate during the war and it was only after the completion of the Second World War that Lebanon became an independent nation. The initial government which was formed suffered from the malady of an imbalance in representation from different sects of population. The Muslims were left out from the government which gave rise to internal turmoil. This situation was aggravated by the inward migration of displaced Muslims from Palestine. The Israeli forces launched attacks on Lebanon in pursuit of the Palestinian Muslims taking shelter there. This civil war ravaged the nation for years to come and was not until recently that peace and tranquility was achieved in the streets of Lebanon.

The capital city of Beirut is conveniently located from almost all of the country’s tourist locations. Aiding tourists is also the small size of the country. Situated to the south of Beirut are the towns of Sidon and Tyre. These coastal towns are famous for their ruins and the Palace of Beiteddine which is a magnificent and grand example of the Ottoman style of architecture set amongst beautiful surroundings. Also located to the south of Beirut is the quaint but a perfect picture postcard port town of Byblos. Worth a visit is the Acropolis of Baalbek which is by far the largest and the most exquisite remains of Roman architecture found in the entire country of Lebanon. The nature lovers can find peace, tranquility and solace amongst the environs of Bcharre and Kadisha Gorge. These two are undoubtedly the most picturesque spots in the entire country. Famous for its winter skiing resort is the Cedars resort which provides keen skiers with amazing and perfect snow covered slopes to relinquish their desire for skiing. Enjoyed equally by locals and tourists are the golden sandy beaches of Lebanon. One gets the opportunity to enjoy water activities like swimming and snorkeling in the coastal cities of Saida and Jbail. Housing some of the earliest Christian settlements in the world is the Qadisha valley which was aptly dubbed as the ‘Holy Valley’.

Lebanon is leaving no stones unturned in realizing its dream of becoming a vibrant and fashionable Middle East destination. The charm of the country still captures the heart of the travelers and makes their trip a memorable one.
