Santa Fe is in New Mexico, in southwest USA. Founded in 1607 by the Spanish, Santa Fe is the oldest capital city in the Unites States. It is also home to the oldest road in the nation, El Camino Real, which runs from Santa Fe to Chihuahua in Mexico, and was first traveled in 1581. The oldest public building in the USA is also here – the Palace of the Governors, built in the early 17th Century.

Copper canyon – One can hike, bike or take the train through these great canyons. A connected runs of six canyons each one bigger than the Grand Canyon is the setting for this extraordinary journey.  Slicing its way through the steep, ragged mountains of the Sierra Madre range in north-west Mexico, copper canyon is home to one of the world’s most dramatic rail journeys. Within 653 km, the Chepe train takes you on a breathtaking ride to a height of over 4000 meters and back to sea level – across the great plains of Chihuahua, through the mountains and across the Pacific coastal plain to Los Mochis. This is not a trip where you simply sit out of the window. There is plenty to see and do en route, from visiting traditional Mexican towns and Tarahumara Indian villages to hiking through a canyon, so most travelers break up the 15-hour journey by spending a night or two at stops along the line.

Yucatan Peninsula is in SE Mexico between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Dating back over 3,000 years, the Mayan Ball Game is one of the oldest sports known to man. There are courts in all the ancient Mexican cities, but the Great Ball court of Chicken itza at 160 m long is the largest. Here opposing teams of seven players had to get the ball through stone rings on either side using only the hips, shoulders, head or chest – and the ball couldn’t touch the ground. It appears the game played a major part in Mayan religion, and losers were sometimes killed as human sacrifices.  Yucatan has many flavors but a week or so will allow an insight into Mayan culture – sun worshippers, nature lovers or divers may want a few more days swimming, touring or diving at Cozumel. The Descent of Kukulcan can be seen from mid – February into April, but it is at its best at the equinox. More of the complex, surprising culture of the ancient Maya can also been seen across Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – from the elegant architecture of Uxmal to the ruins of Palenque, with its labyrinthine Mayam palace and temples rising up the hills amid the thick rainforests of Chiapas. Yucatan Cenotes, the world’s largest underwater caves, this cathedral – like caverns beneath the Yucatan are unforgettable places to dive. Sea of Cortez – Go and see kayaking in the incredibly rich wildlife environment of this scenic gulf coast and islands. You would find so many whales, dolphins and sea birds out there.

Sitting in the resplendent plaza lined with palm trees, enjoying the warm evening air, you will be able to reflect on the train ride of a lifetime.
