Monaco holds the distinction of being a densely populated country, and is also the smallest French speaking country in the world. This country holds a place in Greek mythology, for being one of the places Hercules stopped at, while he was traveling. Although, the French had powers over Monaco for many years, in 1918, there was finally a treaty signed which have Monaco more independence and France lesser powers. The capital is Monaco itself, and the official language, spoken is French.
Monaco is full of very rich people, and is considered to be one of the most expensive countries in the world today. French nationals form the largest part of the population here, while natives of Monaco come second. This country also does not charge its nationals any taxes. Needless to say, the beautiful scenery and other attractions here, make Monaco a very attractive destination for tourists. It is another reason why tourism is such an important industry. Monaco Ville – One can get a good view of the harbour from here. This place is also known for a rich architectural history, and even has many medieval palaces, old houses and vaulted passages. The Prince’s Palace and State Apartments, built in 1215, is a must visit. The Throne Room, and the courtyard, which has a horse shaped marble suitcase, beautified with geometric designs. There is a Museum of Napoleonic Souvenirs and Collection of the Palace’s Historic Archives, that should not be missed as it gives a detailed account of history. There is even a wax museum of the Princes of Monaco to visit. The Saint Martin Gardens are beautiful and are worth a visit.
Monte Carlo – The casinos in Monaco are an alluring feature of the country. One of the best casinos to visit of the Grand Casino, located in the Golden Square, and is now a hallmark in itself. The casino is linked to the Salle Garnier Opera House, by an atrium full of architectural columns. Monte Carlo has other sights too. Drop in at the Observatory Caves and Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology or at the National Museum of Dolls and Clockwork Exhibits of Yesteryear, for some outstanding exhibits.
Fontvielle – This place is famed for the more than 150 varieties of roses that one can enjoy at the Princess Grace Rose Garden. If you have a enjoy collecting stamps and coins, then the Museum of Stamps and Coins is the place to go to, where you can see many rare displays. Vintage cars are a rare item that everybody enjoys, and the exhibition featuring Prince Rainier III’s Private Collection of Classic Cars, is worth going to.
You can have your share of fun here too. The Grand Prix Formula One Race, is a well known annual event worldwide. The weather favours a game of golf and tennis. Besides that, the Mediterranean location has facilities for all kinds of water sports too, besides swimming. A vacation here is certain to give you the needed break.
