The earliest records of Nepal point towards the visit of Gautam Buddha to this mountain abode. Along with him came Buddhism and one more Buddhist loyalist in the form of emperor Ashoka. The death of Ashoka saw a decline in Buddhism and a rise in Hinduism. The Lichhavis and the Thakuris were subsequent kingdoms to rule over Nepal. But it was the Gorkha leader Prithvi Narayan Shah who led the way towards development of modern Nepal. Though most of his hard work was ruined as a result of the famous Kot massacre which bought the Rana’s to power during whose rule Nepal under went the lowest phase in its history.
The beautiful Kathmandu Valley is a treasure cove for all heritage lovers. The streets of this valley have innumerable temples and palaces mellowing with the modern façade of the area. Though this is not where the ‘real’ Nepal is located. To get a feel of the real authentic stuff one has to head away from Kathmandu towards its neighbouring destinations. Pokhara is one such destination which is situated under the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas. The scenic beauty of this place is simply beyond words. it is a place where the clear blue skies reflect in the clear waters of the lakes. Clean, fresh and pure mountain air fills in one’s lungs and detoxifies the system better than anything else. Not to be missed is the beautiful sacred gardens of Lumbini which has also been given a heritage site status. It was in Lumbini that Buddha was born and the area radiates the magnificent aura of beauty and solace till date. Adventure is one activity which has several outlets here in Nepal.
The much obvious one’s being those of mountain climbing, trekking and forest walks. The most preferred mountains to indulge in mountain climbing include the likes of the Everest, Kanchenjunga, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. White water rafting on its gushing water bodies too is very popular here in Nepal and this sport assures you the rush of adrenaline that you are not bound to forget soon in the near future. Nepal also has its fair share of wild life reserves and nature parks. Chitwan, Sukla Phanta and Bardia are some of the most noted wild life reserves located in Nepal which are frequented by tourists to view its wildlife.
