The lurking misconception of being a dangerous country has for long kept visitors away from the hidden natural treasures and sights of Nicaragua. Blessed with pleasant warm weather year around, this country beacons travelers looking for sun, sand and adventure. By providing the visitors a unique and authentic experience, Nicaragua is the “almost” perfect place which one must visit.
Before the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s, Nicaragua was occupied primarily by two major tribes- one comprising of Aztec’s and Mayans while the other had tribes migrated from Columbia. Disputes from within in the form of wealthy landowners and in the form of the British, French and Dutch from outside kept the Spanish busy to retain control over the country.
The raging turmoil in Europe acted as a catalyst for Nicaragua’s independence in 1821. This newly independent rail country fell prey to the American and British both trying to take control over it leading to resistance. Locally elected as well as forceful military governments both proved incapable to bring in sustained peace and led to frequent guerilla resistances. It is not until recently that calmness and tranquility has been bestowed on this nation whose past is almost tarred by upheavals and fights.
Enveloping amongst its arms are lush green rainforests, green landscapes, active volcanoes and pristine beaches. With numerous picturesque colonial churches doting its landscape is the city of Granada. Known for its beaches, nightlife, and fun and frolic filled festivals, this city is located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua which is one of the world’s largest fresh water lakes and is surely rated by the tourists as one of the best tourist locations in the country. Featuring the Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve is the Mombacho volcano. Created by volcanic eruptions in lake Nicaragua are the small islands of Isleta’s. The area around Isleta and Mombacho are popular for kayaking, boat excursions, bird watching etc. Hidden in the northern part of Nicaragua is the Bosawas Biosphere reserve. Protecting thousands of exotic flora and fauna, this reserve is an important rainforest. Adventure seekers can also visit the Corn islands and indulge in deep sea fishing or take a trek up the Nicaragua trails.
Lining the Pacific coast of this nation are beautiful and untouched beaches ready to be explored. San Juan del Sur with its sun kissed beaches and clear blue gentle waters is the perfect place for indulging in water sports while La Boquita is the surfer’s paradise. The city of Leon is the intellectual as well as the architectural capital of the country. In this city besides several colonial churches is located the largest cathedral in Central America. Providing relief from the sun and heat are the highlands in Northern Nicaragua. Cloud forests can be located here in the province of Jinotega and Matagalpa.
With rich colonial history running in its blood and natural beauty brimming from its lush green forests, beaches and grasslands, Nicaragua is slowing becoming popular amongst the traveler community and slowly turning into a tourist hot spot.
