When two countries share the same population and culture then the only factor which proves out to be successful in keeping them apart are geographical boundaries. The same is the case of Korea. A man made geographical divide has partitioned the Republic of Korea into North Korea and South Korea. With same culture, people, language, customs and religion in both the countries they are poles apart in certain aspects too. The amount of openness and liberalization showcased by South Korea is just not into existence in North Korea. In times when the entire world is more than willing to open up its doors and remove all frontiers to welcome in tourists North Korea has chosen to completely withdraw itself from everyone. Entering this beautiful scenic country is not an easy task at all and involves layers of red tapes and diplomatic approvals. But one thing is for sure that who so ever does get the opportunity to venture into this walled country is promised to encounter breath taking views and rich cultural moments. Beautiful buildings, lush green forests, national parks, museums and sights reflecting their culture and heritage are liberally sprinkled all over North Korea to make the holiday trip to North Korea worth all the effort.

Historical data suggests that the existence of Korea dates back to 2000 BC. The land was subsequently attacked by China and thereafter came the three Kingdoms- Shilla, Koguryo and Paekche. Japan after a spate of repeated trails managed to take control over Korea in 1910. This Japanese control was met with repeated resistance from the Koreans but it was not until the time after the Second World War that Korea managed to free itself from the strangles of Japan and proclaim its independence. But this time frame of peace was short lived as soon after the Republic of Korea was divided in North Korea and South Korea. What followed was a bitter cold war between these two countries for the next three years. North Korea since then has completely isolated itself from the outside world.

The capital city of Pyongyang is a city which was built as a representation to showcase to everybody else the goodness that Communism bought with it to North Korea. With perfection and cleanliness radiating from all the artifacts and buildings located in the country one would feel as if they are transported to some place outside Asia. Located near the capital city is the city of Kaesong. This place was once the capital of a former kingdom which ruled over Korea and was a very beautiful and prosperous destination at that point of time. time has played its part here and reduced some of its beauty but whatever still remains here is worth viewing. The museum situated here in the city is worth a visit and so is the Songgyungwan Neo-Confucian College, the ornate tomb of Koryo king Kongmin, the Sonjuk bridge as well as the Songin monument.
Another destination worth visiting in North Korea is the volcanic peak of Paekdusan which is composed of white stone. On top of this dormant volcano is situated lake Chonji inside its crater which is a sight worth freezing in ones memory for ever.  The port side city of Haeju is famous for its beaches, its waterfronts as well as the mountains which stand magnificently in the background. Also worth viewing is the mountain range of Kumgangson which are covered with lush greenery and are for sure amongst the most beautiful ranges in the entire world. Notable areas located within this mountain range include the Manmulsang area and the Kuryong Falls.

A holiday in North Korea will bring you face to face with beauty of the highest level which only a few privileged travelers get the opportunity to view, soak and enjoy. A chance which if provided should be grabbed with both hands!
