Northern Lights; Aurora Borealis

Venue: Lapland, Finland

Schedule: 1st February to 31st March

Mother nature has gifted us with plenty of geographical marvels. Ranging from mountains, to rivers, to valleys to forests each aspect of Nature is special in itself. Adding to this long list of beautiful spectacles is the light display of Aurora Borealis that it orchestrates for us right up there in the skies. Spectacular beams of light radiate and shimmer in the night sky with varying intensities and brightness providing the night sky with an aura which is beyond words. This phenomenon of Aurora Borealis of northern lights can be explained scientifically. This rare light display is a result of the event when charged particles which are found distributed in the solar winds which blow from the sun reach the earth’s atmosphere and subsequently collide with the outer layers of the atmosphere. On collision these particles result in the formation of an unstable particle and subsequently release large amount of energy. It is this released energy which falls within the wavelength of visible light and hence radiates in the form of different corresponding colors. Whatever be the explanation to explain the existence of this rare and spectacular display but when one is there viewing this rare wonder of Northern lights under the complete dark and silent night sky then explanations seem to hold no importance.

The destination of Lapland in Finland is the best location to view these Northern lights which are viewed in the form of pulsating beams of light which constantly change their shape, intensity and form. Greenish yellow and red are the two colors with intensity generally as strong as that of moonlight which wash the night sky when this rare event of Aurora Borealis is up for display. Though it is said that these lights can be seen in the sky from any place in the world but owing to pollution and other issues the night sky is never as clear as that in Lapland to allow us the luxury of viewing this incredible free light show. It is recommended by die hard lovers of this incredible event that in order to get the best sightings of the northern lights or Aurora Borealis then one must straight away head towards Lapland and stay there for at least a week or so to see the lights in their complete range and intensity. Since this phenomenon is a rarity in itself it is expected that it would be attached with its own share of legends and beliefs. The most common legends doing the rounds contribute these brilliant lights to be the proof of dwellers living in the sky; of being the swaying a tail of a fox; lights radiating on Earth from heaven, blood rain and so on.

Since Aurora Borealis or Northern lights are viewed at night therefore guests wake up in the middle of the night and come up under the clear skies and try their luck to witness this sighting. Apart from the time frame of 1st February to 31st March which is best suited to view the Aurora Borealis, there is one more time slot which has been identified for the year 2009 to witness the same and it is between 1st September to 31st  October 2009.
