Location
The O R Tambo international airport is located outside the city of Johannesburg at a distance of 14 miles from the city and takes a comfortable time of 20 minutes to reach the airport from the city.
Airport information
The O R Tambo international airport presently has two terminals. But in wake of the upcoming World Cup tournament in the year 2010 massive development work has been undertaken at the current airport and the future design of the airport will be aimed towards its betterment and progression only. There is the presence of a free shuttle bus service operating between the two terminals and the car parks to facilitate the movement of people around. The two terminals are referred to as terminal A and terminal B where terminal A caters to the international flights and terminal B takes care of the domestic flights. Both these terminal buildings further have two parts. The upper level of both the terminals is dedicated for the departure of flights while the lower levels take care of the arrivals. Transportation from the airport has been taken care of in a very good and smooth manner. Both long as well sas short term parking of cars can be availed at the O R Tambo international airport. Mini bus shuttles and metered taxis can be comfortable accessed from the terminals. The booking of these modes of vehicles can be done from the baggage claim area itself and therefore prevents haggling with the drivers for a fair fare. Apart from the taxis almost all car rental companies have set up their counters at the ground floor of terminal B and offer the visiting traveler their services.
Information desks
Adequate information desks are situated at both the terminals of the airport. While terminal A has these help centers set up both at the arrival as well as departure counters in the case of terminal B these help desks are situated at the arrival areas. These information desks are capable of providing information to the travelers regarding their flights or any other form of information that they desire to seek.
Facilities at the airport
Like all other international airports the O R Tambo international airport too has its fair share of facilities to offer to the visiting traveler. Wireless internet connectivity though is available throughout the shopping as well as the dining area of the airport. Apart from the shopping mall being discussed above there are present several duty free shops at the airport to help you buy items from your shopping lists. Authorized porters are available in the arrival halls of both the terminals and travelers are recommended to tip them as they do not draw any salary from the airport authority. The other facilities situated at the airport include a chapel, an Islamic prayer room, a medical clinic operating around the clock and the presence of a business centre as well as a premiere business centre well equipped with all the modern modes of communication and conference rooms to help take care of your business needs.
There is the presence of a small transit airport right within the premises of the airport while several other well known hotels are located very near to the O R Tambo international airport. These include the likes of Airport Sun Intercontinental hotel, the Southern Sun O R Tambo international airport and the Southern Sun Garden Court.
