Panama achieved independence in 1821 after being under Spanish rule since the 1500’s. with the collapse of Gran Columbia in 1830 of which it was a part of, Panama became a part of modern Columbia. It soon found an ally in the United States of America which has strategic interests in the region specifically an Atlantic Pacific link. It was finally in 1903 that Panama achieved full independence and work on this link commenced leading to the construction of the modern day Panama Canal.
With tourism still in its infancy, Panama is a tropical paradise for adventure lovers. Connecting the Atlantic with the Pacific this canal is often referred as the ninth wonder of the world. This canal houses the island of Barro Colorado on the Gatun lake which is one of the world’s largest artificial lake. This island is a well managed biological reserve. Surrounded by volcanic mountains and picture postcard mountains is the province of Chiriqui. Known for its thorough bred cattle and plantations this region will provide you with endless visual delights. The sparsely inhabited area linking central and southern America is that of Darien gap. Enveloping an amazing array of landscapes ranging from mountains to sandy beaches to mangroves this area is also home to a couple of Indian tribes. The city of Colon is the second largest city in Panama and is a hustling bustling commercial centre. The cathedral and the statues on the promenade are worth a visit while in this city. The Spanish garrison of Portobelo can be visited to experience and view various 17th and 18th century military fortifications. Particularly famous amongst the water sports enthusiasts is the Bocas del Toro province which includes an archipelago of several islands known for their diving potentials.
