Located in the heart of South America is the landlocked country of Paraguay sharing its border with Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil? After experiencing the hustle and bustle of other larger countries of the continent Paraguay will appeal to visitors with its sense of tranquility. Paraguay was closed for tourists for several years due to political turmoil in the country. But this isolation has in turn awakened the curiosity amongst the travelers to explore this mystifying nation. Paraguay was initially inhabited by the simple Indian Guarani tribe till it witnessed the arrival of the Spaniards in 1524. It was only by 1811 that Paraguay declared independence.  Since independence, Paraguay has mostly been under the rule of dictators and has been witness to wars with its neighbors. Considerable improvement has been seen in the county after General Alfredo Stroessner was overthrown in 1989.

The riverside capital city of Asuncion is built in accordance to the famous Spanish grid system inhabiting numerous parks and plazas. Sitting high above this city is the Parquet Carlos Antonio Lopez which provides panoramic views of the city below. The Palacio de Goberno, Panteon de Los Heroes, The Museo del Barro and the Botanical gardens are the other highlights of this city. Situated on the Brazilian border is the city of Acaray which has the beautiful Iguazu waterfalls bringing in tourists in droves. Not to be missed by the wildlife seeking tourists are the amazing Paraguayan Chaco’s biological reserves situated in Limoy, Itabo and Tati Yupi which provide natural habitat to numerous reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Also the protected forests located in Nacunday and Mbaracayu are worth a visit.

The holiday city of Chololo is the place to be in for the fun lovers. With streets lined with pubs and restaurants there is no dearth of entertainment in this city. Also famous amongst visitors is the city of San Bernadino for its tourist resort located on a island in the middle of a lake. The scene for the war of triple alliance is the city of Piribebuy. Renowned for the spindle lace and the sixty stripes Parani Poncho weaved here this place is also famous for being the site of worship of Virgin Mary. The streets of San Lorenzo are adorned with old Gothic churches and building with ancient colonial touches. With sleepy and serene waterfronts along with the famous Gaucho’s found walking on its sandy streets is the city of Encarnacion.

The Jesuit missions found in Jesus de Taravangue and Trinidad del Parana have been declared World cultural Heritage sites by the UNESCO and are part of the 7 largest Jesuit missions in the world which are in Paraguay. Home to only about 3% of the population of Paraguay is the vast land of The Chaco which is covered by mashes, palms and the countries major national parks including the Defensores del Chaco, Tifunque, Enciso and Cerro Cora. Also visit the village of Itagua for the beautiful bedspreads and doilies made by the womenfolk using coloured nanduti.
