The Philippines “Filipino” officially known as the “Republic of the Philippines is an island and is located in South-East Asia with Manila as its Capital city. The country has world’s largest archipelago after Indonesia. It consists of 7,107 islands in the Western Pacific oceans, sharing borders with Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Palau, China. It lies North of Indonesia and directly East of Vietnam. The country is one of the few nations that is both a hotspot and a megadiversity country that has placed itself among the top priority hotspots for global conversation. Philippines is considered as the world’s third largest country in English speaking. It also offers world class facilities and services in terms of accommodation, restaurants and shopping centres. The Philippines is the world’s 12th most populous country with a population of over 90 million as of 2008 and Manila its Capital city is 11th most populous country in the world.

Another most important feature of Philippines is Migration. Previously, the country was an immigrant destination for people in and around Asia and Europe. But recently the trend has been reversed, now people from Philippines are migrating to other places to seek better opportunities and that’s the reason why the country is loosing many of its professionals, skilled and semi-skilled workers. Hence, the correct term to be used here is “Brain Drain”.

Economy

Philippines is a newly industrialized country with an economy dependant on agriculture. But with other contributions also from manufacturing, mining, service industries tourism and BPO’s. The Philippines is listed in the roaster of “Next Eleven” economies.If you talk about local climate it is hot, humid and topical. From March to May it is hot and dry. June to October its rainy and November to February it is cool.

1. Manila: – The Capital city of Philippines situated on the East Coast of Luzon. One of the major attractions of this city is the old Spanish walled city known as Intramuros which consists of some historic buildings and ruins. Public transport is inexpensive but convenient although traffic is bad. Beware of pick pockets in Manila.

2. Cebu: - It is an island and country’s first capital city. It is also known as Queen City of South”. It is the country’s oldest Spanish city with many historic landmarks. You will also find lot many stores, shopping malls, office buildings and movie theaters. Cebu’s most important attraction is its colorful festival that occurs on every Sunday in January known as the Sinulog. Philippines is also served by international and domestic flights to and from the airport. Cebu has shipping crossroads too.

3. Davao: - It is the biggest city in the world and a gateway to South Philippines. It is a hub of commerce, industry and transportation. The attractions of this city are rural landscape of hills and fertile valleys. Davao is good for growing flowers and fruits.

4. Luzon: - It is an international gateway at the North most province in Luzon.

5. Subic: - It is also an international airport that offers both recreation and adventure.

6. Batangas City: – It is 3 hours from Manila known for dive sites and beach resorts.

7. Legaspi City: - Land and Sea connections are available from this gateway.

8. Tacloban City: – It is a gateway to Eastern visayas that made a perfect landing for General Douglas Mac Arthur and American troops.

9. Iloilo City: - It has many historical attractions that include churches and ancestral houses. It is also famous for beaches.

10. Puerto Princesa City: - It is the Capital of Palawan known for exciting species of wildlife and marine life.

11. Cagayan De Oro City: - This city is famous for various adventurous activities like white water rafting, kayaking, canopy walking and surfing islands.

12. Zamboanga City: - It is a gateway to charming attractions and crafts. It shows the culture of five colorful tribal groups living in harmony with Christian community.

Religion

There are mostly Roman Catholic and the rest are Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Taoists.

Language

Filipino is the National language. English is widely spoken but Spanish is spoken less as it is of historical importance in Philippines. Ten other languages and 87 dialects are also used.

Therefore, the country enjoys diversity of attractions, adventurous activities and events which every explorer experiences. Vast mountains and volcanoes talk about great legends, caves excite and shimmering waters and topical climate attract the travellers all around.
