The pint sized oil rich peninsular country of Qatar has since long moved from being a poor country surviving on pearl fishing to its present position of being one of the richest countries in the Gulf. Qatar was one of the first countries to discover oil and though its present resources have depleted quite extensively it is still sitting on its massive reserves of natural oil. Even though the majority of the country still consists of sand dunes and salt plains the tourists are welcomed by its completely different side comprising of magnificent hotels, glorious beaches and plenty of opportunities for water sports.
The glorious historical past of Qatar can be traced way back to 4000BC. Qatar has been under the rule of the Al-Thani family from the 18th century and the family’s influence in the nations’ economic progress is still quite noticeable. Oil was first discovered on its soil in the 1930’s and the discovery bought along with it British interest in the country wherein UK was very keen in providing protection to Qatar. It was finally in 1931 that Qatar declared its independence which led to the complete withdrawal of the British troops. His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is the current Emir of the country and has been ruling Qatar since 1995. The Emir bought with him a positive and a modern approach aimed at bringing a transformation to the country and its perception to the rest of the world.
The capital city of Doha is the perfect mix of tradition and modernization which is showcased to the travelers by means of the juxtaposition of its mosques and modern hotels together. The Grand Mosque and the Abu Bakir al Siddiq mosque are the perfect examples to exemplify the richness of Arabic construction and architecture. The National Museum situated in Doha does an excellent job in tracing back the historical developments of Doha. The modern part of the town is primarily clustered around the Clock tower and the New Amir’s Palace. Both being a must visit themselves. The northern region of the country is particularly visited to reach the village of Umm Salal Mohammed which is largely dominated by the ruins of a 19th century fort making it very intriguing.
The town of Gharya is particularly popular for its endless stretches of golden sandy beaches which surprisingly are not at all crowded. Also noteworthy are the beaches found near the Saudi border and include the beaches at Umm Bab, Dukhan and Salwah. The southern reaches of the country are best for adventure and thrill seekers and it provides excellent facilities to visit its sand dunes and salt plates. Also, the visitor gets the opportunity here to indulge in pearl fishing and several other water sport activities. The true heart of natural beauty is undoubtedly the region of the inland sea of Khor al-Odeid which is surrounded by the magnificent Sandi hills thereby making the region accessible only though vehicles.
Qatar may still not be very popular amongst the tourist community but the people who do visit this incredible country are overwhelmed by the options the county offers to the them to enjoy their visit and to make it truly memorable.
