The Island kingdom of Tonga and its northern neighbor Samoa are both Polynesian islands. These island nations are located in the North East of New Zealand. The island groups in this section of the Pacific Ocean are separated from one another by relatively large distances. Samoa is a society in which chiefly rank plays an important part, matai having a good deal more power, prestige, and authority than commoners.
The kingdom of Tonga consists of 169 islands in two parallel island chains. Tonga encompasses both coral islands and islands of volcanic origin. The island kingdom is home to several active volcanoes. The frequent volcanism in Tonga is the result of country’s location near the collision zone of the Pacific and Indian – Australian tectonic plates. The Tonga trench has a maximum depth of 10,882 meters. Most of Tonga’s eastern islands – including the largest Island Tongatapu – are coral islands, which most of the western islands are of volcanic origin. The largest islands in Samoa are the peaks of large underwater volcanic mountain chains.
Mount Matavanu is located at the center of Savaii, the largest Samoan island. The volcano’s last major eruption in 1905 forced much of the local population to permanently leave the island. Because of the lovely beaches, waterfalls, and fascinating culture, the Samoan islands are considered one of the most attractive destinations in the South Pacific.
Despite the influence of American and European culture, the Samoans have preserved many aspects of their traditional culture. Most of the people of Tonga live by subsistence farming, the main food crops being yams, taro, and cassava. Two-thirds of exports come from coconuts, bananas, and vanilla beans, other cash crops being pumpkin, fruits, and vegetables, cocoa, coffee, ginger, and black pepper. Savaii is the largest Samoan island. Several volcanoes and lava fields such as mountainous interior and lava fields include beaches and waterfalls.
Vpolu is the second largest Samoan island with the most beautiful beaches and waterfalls in the southeast. Manua islands consist of three islands with olosega, ofu and tau covered by sandy beaches and mountains reaching 1,000 meters in height. The Samoans Family and community play an important role in the lives of Samoan’s 200,000 inhabitants. Tofua islands are the home to Tonga’s most active volcanoes – the site of the famous mutiny on the ship bounty in 1789. Vana’u is one of the most beautiful of Tonga’s island groups with boat expeditions through the islands having accessible caves.
I bet you guys a visit to these wonderful islands would be the most unforgettable experience ever.
