Saudi Arabia is a country enveloped in mystery to the outside world. The strict Islamic laws and the country’s general reserved attitude towards the western world acts as a major deterrent amongst the keen tourist community.  But it is in all a question of looking beyond this veil which will provide you with a whole new perspective to view Saudi Arabia. The country has a huge reserve of beautiful oases and incredible mountain tops, riverfronts and beaches to flaunt. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is situated at the cross roads of three continents- Asia, Africa and Europe and is clearly the cradle of Islam as tow of the religion’s most sacred sites of Mecca and Madina are located within its boundaries. The major cities of Saudi Arabia are capable of greeting the tourists with world standard facilities and amenities making them at par with any other country of the world.

It was during the early 18th century that the present day royal family of Al Saud ruled as sheiks in the village of Dir’aiyah. An alliance formed between the ruler of this village Muhammad bin Saud and a preacher Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab led to the establishment of the Saudi empire. It was after the Second World War that oil production caught up in Saudi Arabia and turned out to be the biggest revenue generator for the country.

The religious site of Mecca and Madina are the biggest crowd pullers in the country of Saudi Arabia. Though it should be kept in mind that these places are open for visit only to the Muslims and entry is denied to these two destinations for all non Muslim visitors. The city of Mecca is Islam’s holiest city. Every Muslim living in any corner of the world is expected to come on a pilgrimage which is termed as a ‘Haj’ at least once to this holy destination. In the centre of the city is located the Grand Mosque. Located in the centre of the courtyard of the Grand Mosque is the Kaaba. Located in the city of Madina is the Prophet’s Mosque that contains the Prophet’s burial place. Riyadh and Jeddah are the other destinations in Saudi Arabia which can be explored by the tourists visiting the country. One can tour around the exquisite and simple amazing coral houses found in the older section of the town in Jeddah while at the same time marvel at its incredible souks and market places. Also worth exploring is the Masmak fortress located in the centre of the town of Riyadh or roam about amongst the ruin remains of the village of Dir’aiyah located just outside the city limits of Riyadh. Famous for its pink palaces and absolutely modern winding roads leading up towards higher reaches of the mountains located here is the destination of Taif.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has for long enticed travelers with its mystery and magic. Oil may have transformed the land of Bedouins into a land of billionaires and Sheikhs. Just the thought of sharing a star lit night sky under a tent with a Bedouin provides enough impetus to anyone to come and soak in the experience of this conservative Arab community called the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
