Seychelles, which is officially also known as the Republic of Seychelles, is actually an archipelago, made of more than 100 islands in total. This group of islands, passed on from Portuguese hands to the French, and finally landed in the British. Eventually, in 1976, Seychelles got its independence within the Commonwealth. Victoria is its capital. English, Creole and French are the three main languages spoken here. The main industries which contribute to the economy are tourism and tuna fishing.

Due to the influence of Europeans, Seychelles is home to people from many countries- such as Asians, Indians, French, English and even Chinese. A large part of the population is Catholic. This mixed influence can be seen especially in the cuisine and in the music of the land. French folk and pop, exist side by side with other pan African genres. The people by nature are very friendly and lead relaxed lives.

Since Seychelles is primarily dominated by water on all sides, tourists usually come here for a relaxing holiday by the beach. The beaches themselves are untouched and maintained well, which is why Seychelles is often termed a paradise. Praslin Island, is a favourite vacation spot , lying to the north east of Mahe. Anse Lazio, is a beautiful beach here, and the island has many coral reefs too. The ‘ coco de mer’plant, is found here. One can even spot the black parrot and the fruit pigeon here, two birds studied extensively by ornithologists. Swimming and fishing are two activities tourists love to indulge in. Mahe, which is the most populated island among them all, also is a delight to visit.

Besides the international airport and the capital- Victoria both which are located here, this island holds its own charm. A breathtaking island range – Morne Seychellois, is also the highest peak here. One can even do a bit of hiking. The beaches allow tourists to indulge in many water sports, from diving to water skiing. However, although these islands are known primarily for their beaches and the unspoiled islands, Seychelles has its share of monuments mainly erected in the time of its colonial rulers also.

One such monument which attracts visitors is the Bicentennial monument which was built to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the capital- Victoria. A 19th century cathedral dedicated to the Lady of Immaculate Conception (Virgin Mary), was one of the first churches to be built and attracts many visitors. The Bel Air cemetery in Mahe, is the first historic site to be built and is the resting place of many famous personalities. Seychelles is home to some of the most exotic flora and fauna in the world. Aride Island, is one such nature reserve which is home to many seabirds, as well as endemic birds such as Magpie Robins, the Blue Pigeon and to a rich marine life.

Seychelles is the perfect getaway spot for a tourist who likes nothing better than a relaxing holiday by the beach. The beauty is alluring enough for you to come back again.
