The past historical details of Sri Lanka date back near the 6th century when it is believed that Sinhalese arrived here on the island from India. They remained in constant touch with the main Indian rulers and it was the contact with one of the Indian rulers Ashoka that bought along the spread of Buddhism in this country. The strategic placement of Sri Lanka soon made it a target to almost all important colonizing powers of the world. The Portuguese landed on its shore first to be followed by the Dutch and finally the British. It was in 1948 that Sri Lanka managed to win its freedom from the clutches of the British forces. But the independence bought with it internal turmoil’s, fights, riots and political instability. The internal ethnic conflict brewing on for some time gained immense strength by the year 1970 and led to the formation of the LTTE. This outfit made north Sri Lanka as its main area and since then continuous warfare has been raging between these extremists and the regular army troops.
