Surrounded by Guyana, French Guiana and Brazil is the country of Suriname which is credited for being the smallest country in South America. Touted as being a popular destination with the nature loving traveler is this simple country of Suriname. Constant and rapid improvement in living options and transportations is surely increasing the country’s popularity as a tourist destination. With pristine Amazon heartland and fresh clean air humans and animals live here in perfect harmony. With other popular destinations becoming more and more crowded these lesser known serene destinations will soon feature on every ones wish list. Exploring these new, virtually unknown areas of the world fills one with the mystic high which is simply un-explainable.
Till 1954 Suriname was a Dutch colony which finally became independent in 1975 after being a self governing state. Coups arising in the country have constantly caused disturbances to the political climate of the country leaving it marred and unstable. A heady stable concoction of cultures is found in this country bought in by the English, the Dutch, and the Africans and in recent times by the Indian and the Chinese settlers.
Situated amongst the rainforests is the Brownsberg National Park located in the Brokopondo district. Safeguarding three waterfalls, hundreds of different species of commercially valuable plants and animals this national park is a haven for nature’s explorations. Also present in Suriname is the Galibi Natural reserve which was established to provide nesting grounds to the Oliver Ridley turtles.
The Wia Wia reserve located on a mangrove covered marshland is famous for being the nesting place for leatherback turtles and for being an excellent bird watching point. Paramaribo is the capital of Suriname. Built sometime in the 17th century this colonial town showcases its British, Dutch and Spanish legacies in its buildings and architecture. House to the rich history of this country is the Surinam museum which is located in the Fort Zeelandia. A witness to cultural diversities is the structures of the Roman Catholic cathedral which is built entirely from wood, the Independence square and the palm trees lined Presidential Palace. Situated to the south of Paramaribo are the ruins of the first ever Jewish synagogue in the western hemisphere the Joden Savanne- Jews’ Savannah.
The country may not have picturesque beaches and sandy coasts to boast of but its wealth lies in its exotic and well preserved flora and fauna. Lush greenery and wild animals in their natural habitat is the treasure that this small country is blessed with.
