Countless number of movies have been shot here, amidst the beautiful locales. It is spoken of as being ‘ THE’ destination for honeymooners. One visit here is enough to bring you back a second time. With regards to its location, Switzerland is located in Western Europe, and is surrounded by the best of nature. This country was once under the French rule, before it became independent much later. Its economy today, is considered very sound in all ways. In particular the manner in which the government has always protected and promoted its industries is commendable.
The Swiss seem to have a touch of gold. Almost everything they touch, becomes a hallmark in itself. The tourism in the country speaks for itself. But on the other hand, Switzerland is famous for its banking practices, pharmaceuticals, and manufacture of engineering instruments. Watches made here, are renowned for their style and quality. Swiss cheese and other milk-based products are famous all over the world. The Red Cross movement, which is present all over the world and is known for its humanitarian activities originated here. Switzerland today, is a confluence of many cultures, and people from all over Europe. It is no wonder then that the three official languages spoken here are German, Italian and French.
This country is famous also for its many cultural activities that take place often. Bern is its capital and is a favoured starting point for a tour.
Bern – This city has a medieval touch to it, complete with fountains, towers and narrow streets. It is also the seat of the government, and a visit to the Bundeshaus, or Houses of Parliament is a must. The Rose Garden, and the platform of the 101-metre-high cathedral tower, give one a great view of the city. The works of the artist Paul Klee are displayed at the Zentrum Paul Klee, and there is even an Albert Einstein house, open to the public. One can visit the Botanical Gardens located along the river Aare, as well as the Dahlholzi Zoo. There is also a 13th century clock tower called the Zeitglockenturm. The Bern Jazz Festival and the Bern Dance Festival are two important events that take place here.
Geneva – It is the headquarters of the Red Cross and is often called ‘the capital of peace.’ The symbol of this city is the Jet déau, a fountain with a 140-metre high water jet located at the Lake Geneva. The Cathedral of St Pierre is an important example of Romanesque architecture and is beautiful. The centre of the old town is called the Place du Bourg- de- Four. Geneva is famous for the shopping spots that dot the city, not to forget some very important banks too. The largest flower clock in the world, called the Horloge Fleuri is found here in the Jardin Anglais. The Musée International de l’horlogerie, interestingly is a watch museum, with a huge collection of musical clocks and watches. Many renowned performers stage concerts at the Geneva Opera House. Do not forget to visit Mont Saleve, where you can take a cable car and view the whole city from the sky. One can even go for cruises on the Lake Geneva.
Zurich – It is generally known as the financial capital of Switzerland. Culture and the arts take on a new meaning in this city. The Kunsthaus, which is an art gallery, is famed for the pieces of contemporary art it showcases often. The Rietberg Museum, has many exhibits and artefacts from non European cultures. The Zurich Opera House is one of the more famous stages throughout Europe for ballet recitals. There are three churches here that are of important significance. The Grossmunster was built by Karl the Great, the St Peter’s Church has the largest clock dials throughout Europe, and the Fraumunster is famous for the stained glass work that is there in its interiors. The Zurich Zoo is renowned for the different species of plants and animals, from the Masoala Rainforest in Madagascar.
Basel – This city is a history lovers dream city- it is known to have almost 40 museums, ranging from history to art. Museums such as the Basel Art Museum (which has one of the oldest art collections in the world), the Fondation Beyeler ( which has many art exhibitions) and the Museum of Cultures (which is devoted to life in different cultures) are a few. The symphony orchestra and the musical theatre originated here. The ruins at Augusta Raurica, give information about the daily lives of Romans. There is even a Zoological Garden, which has more than 500 species of animals, and lots of exotic flora too. The Fasnacht, an annual carnival holds great importance for the people.
Switzerland is famed for the many snow related activities that the country offers. The Portes du Soleil in Geneva, is a cluster of small resorts which in turn make a huge skiing circuit. The village of Champery is also worth a visit. Valais, which runs between the northern and southern most part of the Alps, has many famous resorts. The village of Zermatt is known for its skiing facilities. If you are an experienced skier, then head to Verbier. If however, you are new to skiing then the best place to learn is at Saas Fee, which has high slopes. Lucerne is famed for its natural beauty, which includes mountains, pine forests and meadows. Ferries connect the many lakes together. One can visit mountains such as Gutsch, Pilatus and Sonnenberg, by cable cars. Andermatt and Engelberg, near Lucerne are two places, which attract a lot of tourists especially for skiing. If you are keen on a spot of hiking, then Appenzell, situated in northeast Switzerland, is the perfect place for hiking tours, especially on the mountain Santis. The river Rhine, which becomes a waterfall, near Schaffhausen is stunning to see and is one of the largest waterfalls in Europe.
With so much to see and do, Switzerland will always remain one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
