The country of Syria is drenched in its history. Every corner of this country has been witness to some event of historical importance. Syria gained complete independence in 1946 after being ruled and colonized by several powers following World War one.

The capital city of Damascus has the honor of being one of the oldest inhabited city in the world. This itself goes on to speak volumes about the cultural diversity that this city must be brimming with owing to the vast exposure it has had to various civilizations setting foot in it. The old city area of the Damascus encapsulates within itself a completely different word full of old time rustic charm and a sense of time wound backwards. With old walls giving way to cobbled streets paved out for donkey driven trolleys to move by, it is surely an experience worth viewing. With the cries of merchants calling in buyers for their wares ringing in the ears the atmosphere is alive and kicking. The air is full of pungent aromatic smells of herbs put out by the traders and the markets are bustling with people in their traditional dresses. The Omayyad mosque located in the city is undoubtedly its prime feature. Built in 705AD this mosque has a central hall where the devotees kneel down facing the direction of the holy city of Mecca. A walk through the Ghota which are fruit orchids and surround the city of Damascus are worth visiting during early spring when the orchids are in their full blooming glory.

The city of Alleppo is also worth visiting to explore the Citadel which is a 12th century fort and is situated on a hill which is surrounded by a moat. The tunnels and dungeons situated in the fort makes one feel as if they are on an adventurous treasure hunt trip. The city of Palmyra takes one on an authentic Arab experience. With the ruins of a Roman city scattered around in the town along with the smells and sounds of souks and mosques, Palmyra provides you the complete insight into Arabic lifestyle. Also home to an architectural marvel is the city of Hama which is known for its large wooden water wheels.
