Tanzania, which is officially called the United Republic of Tanzania, is located in the East of Africa. A look at its early history gives evidence of Tanzania having conducted immense trade with India and China in the 15th century. It however became a German colony in the 19th century, and the area then went on to British hands soon after. However, 1961, Tanzania gained its independence. Dodomo is its capital and the official language spoken here is Swahili.

Archaeologists believe that Tanzania was home to some of the earliest humans on the planet, as fossils excavated there have dated back to over 2 million years back. The African natives here consist of more than 120 ethnic groups. Besides these however, there are people from many other countries who have made this country their home. Indians, Parsis, and other Asians also form a good part of the population. Islam and Christianity are the main religions practiced here, besides the local beliefs of the people. Music is considered important, and is both African and Arab in nature, with many beats to it.

There is much to see and do in this country. Dar es Salam, an important commercial city is usually the starting point for all trips. One can see the National museum, and the Village Museum here, which has many traditional arts and crafts on display.  Msasani, which is a small fishing village, has 17th century tombs there. If one wishes to see examples of Portuguese and Arab architecture then a trip to Kilwa Klsiwani is a must. This city has many beaches too, such as Kunduchi and Mjimwena.

There is an island called the Mbudya Island where one can indulge in diving, fishing and snorkeling. Places like Bagamoyo and Kaole are home to many ancient mosques, and tombs dating back to the 18th century. The island of Zanzibar which was once the largest producer of cloves in the world, is a favourite tourist spot. The Old Stone Town here, full of narrow lanes and exciting markets is a World Heritage site. One can visit the palace of the former Sultan here. Since this island has such an important place in production of spices, there are even many ‘Spice Tours’, which are considered a must.  Changuu Island, lying not far off is another place which favours diving and snorkeling.

Tanzania is home to some important national parks and ten game reserves. The Serengeti National Park, considered one of the best in Africa, is home to more than 35 species of animals, and an extensive bird population. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is a breeding ground for flamingoes. The beauty of this park lies in the Ngorongoro Crater, which is a collapsed volcano, but is where almost every African mammal that lives on the plains can be found. Lastly, a trip to Tanzania wouldn’t be complete without seeing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent, which is a mountaineer’s dream climb.

Tanzania is a country with so much to see, with a little bit of everything to cater to what a tourist would like to see and do on a vacation.
