Chad is a landlocked country in central Africa. France occupied this territory adding it to its colonies, in the early 20th century but by 1960, the country had gained its independence. French and Arabic are the official languages spoken here and N’Djamena is the capital city. Chad is important to archaeologists as settlements as early as 2000 BC have been excavated here.

The rich culture of this country is enhanced with the variety of people here and the languages. The government too eagerly promotes the cultural diversity of the country, and attempts have been made to preserve the culture. One such attempt is the Chad National Museum having been set up to educate tourists about the country itself. Located near the capital, it speaks about the history, folklore, crafts and other traditions followed here. The prehistory section also has relics from the Stone Age, baked bricks, masks, bronze objects and tools made from bone.

Music plays an important role in the culture here, and instruments like the kinde and kakaki are used here. No wedding or important ceremony is complete without music. Chad, also has many places for tourists to visit. Abeche is a large city, which attracts visitors, for the mosques, leather based handicrafts as well as for the palace of the sultan located here. Besides that, the scenic beauty that is characteristic of Africa is found here too. Lake Chad, a few kilometers away from the capital is reputed to be the fourth largest lake in Africa, and although the waters are receding slowly, many tourists love to take a ride in the canoes. One can spot crocodiles, waterfowls, fishes and other birds here. The receding waters are blamed for the fall in other wildlife such as giraffes, hyenas etc which used to be found near the lake earlier.

The Tibesti mountains are a must visit, located in the north of Chad. They are a group of dormant volcanoes, which are known for their hot springs, and amazing caves. The mountains however are important to archaeologists, as there have been many prehistoric paintings, which have been found on the walls of the caves. It is believed that the paintings themselves were made for religious purposes, as other signs of habitation have not been found. The Zakouma National park, is remembered as the first national park set up in Chad. Many species found there were wiped out due to poachers and illegal trading. More than 44 species of animals and over 25 species of birds can be found here. Elephants, lions, giraffes, gazelles and hippos are some of the animals found here. Taking a safari ride through this park, is a must. The availability of accommodation for tourists has helped increase visitors here. The Bahr Salamat Faunal Reserve, is a conservation area which covers the national park, and which also has a controlled hunting area.

The weather in Chad favours vacations, as almost every day is sunny, besides the rainy season from June to September. A trip here is certain to have many pleasant memories for you.
