Iraq has long been depicted to the world as being the land of violence, extremism and religious intolerance. But there is so much more than this in this magical country of Iraq. There is an abundance of natural beauty, incredible architectural remains and plenty of cultural and historical sites found in Iraq. This fact mentioned will be enough to surprise many of you who have never dared venture your thoughts to this country beyond the violence and insurgency wreaking the nation apart. The mesmerizing beauty of Iraq with its lakes, highlands, deserts, mountains and rivers is capable of leaving even the most travelled tourist spell bound with awe and amazement. Iraq is credited to have been supposedly the location of the famous Garden of Eden as well as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Iraq was initially under the rule of the Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian empires before it finally came under the Arab control in 663 AD. The Arabs relinquished control over this region till the 13th century before losing Iraq to the Mongols and later on to the Turks. UK, in 1920 placed Iraq under a league of Nations mandate and was not until 1932 that the country of Iraq finally managed to declare independence.
Placed in the topmost list of the places amongst all the tourist destinations is the capital city of Baghdad. Situated on the bank of the river Tigris, Baghdad was initially supposed to be a round city with its mosque situated in the centre well in accordance to its influence to Persian architecture.
The Baghdad tower, the National Museum as well as the Al Shaheed Monument are the places to visit in the city of Baghdad. The ruling government is constantly striving and aiming to preserve its Islamic character depicted through the ruins of its old historical building like the Ike Abbasid palace. Worth an experience are the museums of Iraqi folklore and Modern Art. Baghdad was a primary centre of learning and trade in the 8th and the 9th century. Located south of Baghdad is Babylon. Both the city as well its famous hanging gardens are under massive restoration and revival. One of the largest and oldest city of Iraq, Arbil, is another major tourist destination of Iraq.
This city was initially the home of the Iraqi government officials before they shifted to Baghdad. Karbala is another major tourist hub in Iraq. Housing a major chunk of the wealthiest population primarily because of its religious and agricultural importance this region gains incredible popularity amongst travelers. The tomb of Husayn, Masjid al Husayn is an important place of pilgrimage amongst the Shia sect of the Muslim community world over. Famed for its endless burning of gas seepage which has been appropriately termed as the “ Eternal fires” is the city of Kirkuk which shot to fame with the discovery of oil in its soil. Located near the northern town of Mosul is the rich archaeological site of Nineveh.
Iraq surely has enough to amaze and surprise anyone visiting the country with a preset notion and mind frame displaying and conveying blood and death. Iraq has beauty, beauty which is now being marred by man for his selfish needs and desires.
