Mauritius, which is officially known as the Republic of Mauritius, is a small island, which is located off the African continent. Its capital is Port Louis. Mauritius has hosted many travelers, on its lands, right from the 10th century. The Arabs who came first were soon followed by the Dutch. The Dutch did not find the small island very appropriate to set base for anything and it was not long before the French took over. One can credit the French with having enriched the island’s economy, with the production of Propecia buy sugar. Not long later in the early 19th century, The British took over the island, till Mauritius gained its independence in 1968.
The natives of Mauritius come from many places like India, France, England, Madagascar and China. The official languages here are both English and French, although the medium of communication among the locals, is Mauritian Creole. There are many Indians staying here too, from different parts of India. Hinduism followed by Christianity form the two widely followed religions in the land. Agriculture, production of rum and sugar form the most important industries here. The culture of the people bears various foreign influences. The natives on the other hand are very easy going by nature, and are friendly. Tourism being the island’s hallmark, the natives are more than happy to help tourists out anytime.
Along with Reunion and Rodrigues, Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands. These islands themselves were formed after intense volcanic activity around 10 million years back. It is no wonder then that the island is home to some of the most exotic beaches in the world. One of the areas of the island called the Grand Bay, were among the first to experience the tourist boom. Tourists love this place for the shopping experience that it offers. One can spot lovely discos and restaurants here. Port Louis, is home to some lovely French styled buildings, the Natural History Museum and cathedrals. The Champs de Mar is a world renowned race course. The Domaine les Pailles nature park is a must for nature lovers with its natural springs and rum distillery.
Besides that the Pamplemousses Gardens which was built in the 18th century, are known world wide, for the exotic collection of plants found here. The Casela Bird Park, has more than 140 varieties of birds, including the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, fish ponds, and orchids. In the south, crocodiles are bred in the La Vanille Crocodile Park. There is a nature walk in the forest with springs. Tamarin, which lies near the Riviere Noire Mountains, Trox aux Biches, Choisy which offers many water sports, and Pereybere, are some of the best beaches on the island. Besides these, there are many seaside resorts and lagoons with their own beaches. One can even go for a hike and do some trekking in the interior of the islands.
Although this island is better known for the white sandy beaches, there are many more activities that tourists can indulge in. A trip here is certain to refresh your mind and senses.
